View Full Version : Can the Comedy Pyramid survive?

Now, that the phones are up and running, I pose the question:

Is it time to let this bit die?

I always loved the comedy pyramid, and I know it's early on in the game (which is sad when you realize that RNF's one years anniversary is coming up, but I digress).

But so far the first few comedy pyramids have been atrocious. When Ron made that crack the other day about being able to tell the New York callers, I laughed my ass off. Obviously, the pyramid is a fast-paced bit that is extremelly caller-driven. And given that RNF are on a national platform now, I find myself wondering if the callers can be trained? Or are they dipping into too large a pool of listeners to expect clever line after clever line?

Do the Red State contributions suck so bad because of the awful accents or is it because of the awful content, or both? Or is it just because they are too fucking stupid to turn down their radio and deliver the line without asking Ron how he is doing.

The pyramids will be fine, as long as the hayseeds get up to speed. And Matty calls in on every one!

CYA!

If you want an answer to this question, find the first 3 or 4 pyramids they ever did. If they sucked, then it's possible that they can get better on XM. The Pyramid is a concept that takes some fan training. If the phones had worked right from day one, I think we would be seeing some fine ones by now.

i'd like to think they can survive, as listeners we have a sense of humor that's why we like the show.

This is not intended as a bash on the DC callers, but the pyramids have been on a major upswing since the JFK days.

Considering we got two high-quality pyramids in one show alone on Friday, I think we'll be fine. The Hitler "pyramid?" was some funny shit, mainly because of Ron's "reluctance".

And thanks, Hottub.

It's been a staple of the show for eons. If it fails it's kinda YOUR fault, isn't it?
I hope so. The Comedy Pyamid never had callers from Georgia before. Not meant as knock, but it seems like most RNF fans I talk to agree NY callers were the best.

Let's keep ignoring that there were WJFK listeners during all (but the first month) of the WNEW run - and, again, for the record - to sound like my own apologistic broken one - for much of their exclusive run, DC callers just didn't exist. The ones that did bother, for much of 2003-2004 did suck, but what DC lacked in clever callers was made up by the IMers (shout out to Yerdaddy) and the plethora of fan produced characters, many who are still part of the show. There were signs of improvement when the Hideout followed them, creating a nice united nightly front, with the pyramids and caller interaction in Dec 2004 and early 2005 when their ratings spiked (shortly before the first YMB show) - I can think of several pyramids during that time that were hysterical. Many of the regular callers into the Hideout still call in down in Florida, as they train their new listeners too.

It was a brief window, but IMO it did show that even the hayseeds living in their Fairfax County $800,000 condos could get up to speed with The Ron and The Fez. If that can happen, anything can happen.

Curtoid is right, and I thought about this last night - a big factor that lead to a quality comedy pyramid was the instant feedback.

It's really easy to write a good joke - but it's much harder to deliver it on radio with the proper timing. Instant feedback helped alleviate that problem, because all you had to do is write it and send it in, and then someone with awesome timing - Ron - would read it.

I think the feedback also helped focus the pyramids as well.

I wonder why Ron doesn't use AIM or instant feedback during the show anymore. Is it an XM thing, a staff thing, or just a personal preference?
