There IS footage of the attack.

Wildlife documentary maker Ben Cropp, citing a colleague who saw footage of the attack, told Time.com that Irwin had accidentally boxed the animal in. He has a little boy that I think is now 3 or 4 years old. And if they are the kind of husband and wife I think they are, they MIGHT show the footage as a way to show what NOT to do to a stingray, safety style of video.

He died doing what he loved, not many people can say that.

RIP Steve!!

"Oi! On my local news tonight, they said only 16 people have been killed by stingrays since 1969. That's pretty low considering how much contact there is between them and humans. The whole thing is just crazy.

I don't think I've ever seen anyone live their life with as much enthusiasm and unfettered joy as the Crocodile Hunter. The guy's attitude was infectious, and even though his popularity kind of waned in recent years he gave me lots of laughs and cringes.

Even though you always had the feeling he wouldn't die a natural death it still sucks that he went so young and in such a one-in-a-million way.

I WAS VERY SADDENNED TO HEAR OF STEVE IRWIN'S PASSING.That was a very tragic accident. From the news stories I have read so far it sounded like he never had a chance. he was actually kinda fun to watch. Boy, I bet those crocs are going to miss him for sure.

r.i.p.

i always thought steve irwin was JUST a crazy guy that jumped on croc's. but since his death they've been showing a lot of his stuff on the animal planet and he actually did a lot of good for the environment. he was a guy who lived with his heart on his sleeve and spent his life doing what he wanted and died doing what he loved....if he didn't have a wife and two young children this story wouldn't seem as sad. as tony danza would say "hearts, thoughts and prayers" to his family.

It was a tragic and somehow fitting death, that such a rare
occurance in nature would lead to the death of one of natures true
Advocates.

He really brought the "wildlife genre" back
into the mainstream... And at a time when reality TV is corroding
brains everywhere.. it was nice to be educated all the while being
entertained by this kooky Aussie who really REALLY knew his
shite. Here's hoping he has inspired enough of us to keep his
memory and commitment to wildlife conservation, education, and zoology
alive and kicking.

RIP, mate.

However, in terms of him being a true biologist/zoologist, he was a fool who let money overtake his professionalism in a very dangerous arena. At least with the wild boyz you know they are complete asses, but Steve took stupid chances for the thrill of it acting like it was necessary or warranted. Simply put most of the time these chances were taken in an effort to futher his career in terms of money and popularity. He kept upping the ante of late as well in an effort to reclaim his past fame. I had arguments with a few of my friends on him and I guaranteed them he'd be dead in ten years. We'll it's been about five, and I'm definitely not happy about being right. Killermcgee makes a lot of good points as well in terms of his charity work too, which makes this even harder.

I heard people saying he shouldn't have taken big risks, since he had a family. That's like saying, all people who have families, should choose professions that keep them totally safe. What the fuck is totally safe?

WHATEVER YOU THINK OF THE GUY, HE HAD PASSION, HE WAS WIDE OPEN FULL THROTTLE PASSIONATE ABOUT WHAT HE DID, AND HE DIED DOING IT. YOU CAN SAY IT WAS MONEY, FAME, OR WHATEVER, BUT THAT MF'ER HAD PASSION AND DIED WITH IT. WHO ELSE IS GONNA BE ABLE TO SAY THAT WHEN THEIR GONE? RAISE YOUR HAND.
Apparently, they're dedicating a garden in front of Discovery Communications headquarters in Silver Spring to his memory. Fitting considering he probably helped finance the place. Things will just never be the same on Animal Planet. Very Sad.
