They were interviewing some douche from th oil company tonight on the network news, he said that Katrina cost the oil companies over $100 million last year and of course they had to pass those costs on to the public.

Of course the reporter never even mentioned the $40 billion in profits (or whatever rediculous amount it was) they made in the first quarter this year.

And I just traded in my SUV for a car.

I should've known. It NEVER pays to be a hippie.

On a serious note, the problem isn't that we are going to run out of oil but that all the oil that was "easy" to exract is running out and that while there is plenty of oil out there, it is more difficult and expensive to extract and takes longer to pump out. That could result in oil demand outpacing supply and the price of oil skyrocketing. I don't know if this is the kind of oil that can be "quickly" extracted but it clearly will be quite expensive.
It's too expensive for the companies to dump money into this sort of project when oil is cheaper. The same can be said for the shale oil under Colorado and Utah. It's very expensive to extract and convert into liquid fuel, so the only way it will ever be used is if oil becomes much more expensive. I believe Shell, or Exxon, actually was extracting the shale oil back in the late 70's early 80's when there was an oil crisis, but it was killed once the crisis ended because it wasn't worth the money.

And the real problem isn't supply, it is refinery capacity. No US oil company has put a new refinery online since around 1970, and they have no intention of doing so. OPEC has said before that they are running below full capacity (not sure if this is still true), because they had a surplus due to lack of refineries.

now hey call me a pot smokin hippie but if this reserve is in the gulf of mexico wouldnt the oil riggs there be ready to be destroyed during the hurricane season, then spilling thousands of gallons of oil all over the carribean and eastern seaboard of south and north america. wanna make gas cheaper give a ton of tax rebates to people who install solar panels on their homes. seriously as was stated before it doesnt make sense drilling and drilling for a finite source of energy. there are other ways to fuel our economy can we just start seriously looking instead of calling people who explore other possibilities prisoners of delusions of grandeur. fuck man. perhaps our federal gov't would b able to help in said search but hey our leaders pockets are lined in oil money and give the richest 1% the biggest tax breaks as opposed in investing this money into exploring new ideas.
