It the next 14 or 15 hours my father's life may change forever. 13 years ago my father lost his right leg to an aneurysm. He has adapted very well since then, he can drive with his left foot, etc. During the last 10 years my mother has come down with a disease much like alzheimer's, and my father, who is now 73, has taken care of her. Over the last few weeks my father developed an infection on his left foot. His doctor gave him antibiotics and creams but nothing has worked. So, his doctor thinks that he may not be getting much circulation to his foot. Tomorrow morning he goes to see his surgeon to have tests done to see if they need to take the toes off his left foot. If that happens, he'll never walk again, never be able to take care of my mother, and just never be independent like he always has been.

Damn, the older I get, and I am not old, the more I realize how crappy life can be. I mean the person who was probably the strongest person you knew could possibly become the weakest. People can die or become disabled at the drop of a hat.

My whole life till the age of 25 I never lost anyone even close to me. I now realize I am due for a shitload of bad shit. I hear horror stories all the time (on the news or a family member of a friend of a friend) but it doesn't mean anything untill it happens to someone you are close to and have seen at their peak. Its terrible to see someone get broken down one piece at a time though.

I hope all is well. He will need all the support possible, good news or bad. I am not pious, otherwise I would pray. My thoughts are with your BDS.

Well that really sucks... I'm sorry to read about the condition of your parents...

Having been through some rough times healthwise with both of my parents, I can feel for what you are going through. Keep your chin up and be there to support both of your parents through this tough time.

Sorry to hear that bro. You have to keep optimistic and aware that there are new things happening in medicine all the time. From what you describe, the Dr seemed unsure as to wether the circulation loss would require the removal of the toes. I would stress getting another opinion or two before they do anything drastic! Just to be sure, you know? There are all kinds of things, like prosthetics (sp?) that may be able to enamble his mobility, even without the toes. Good luck! Thoughts and prayers are with you bud!

Boonie, isn't there some kind of prosthetic "shoe" he could wear? You see guys all the time that lost entire legs getting around, I would think there's something available for him. Hopefully, anyway.

Best luck Bro, dealing with stuff like this happens to us all sooner or later.

Thanks eveyone for your words. Well, there was good news and bad news. The good news is that his circulation was fine. The problem is that the infection he had was an abcess. So, his surgeon drained it and changed his medication. Now, next week he has to go to another doctor and have xrays taken in order to make sure that the infestion didn't reach the bone. He seemed to be optimistic about everything but the more I read about the more I don't like the sound of it. I guess I'll just have to wait and see.
