So, the wife is out with friends, the baby is in bed, and I have a mason jar filled with Knob Creek and Coke, and I'm watching the Criterion edition of Seven Samurai. Great flick. I think this is going to set off a Akira Kurosawa run of movies for me to watch. I've seen The Magnificent Seven, and as good as that was, this movie is far better. Out of all of the foreign directors out there, is there any of them more influential than Kurosawa? Maybe Fellini or Bergmann. But, with this movie, and Rashomon, Yojimbo, HIidden Fortress, and Ran, amongst others, these are some top influential movies on American cinema.

Blowhard's been urging me to watch this movie for years now and I've still never seen it.

If Eli's raving about it too I guess I just may have to finally watch it.

Hayao Miyazaki is very influential on the animated front.

I should add that I've had several mason jars of Knob Creek and coke, so my evaluation that Kurosawa may be the most influential foreign born director may be a little off, but not by much.

Yojimbo was also made into "Last Man Standing", which was a supreme piece of shit.

If any of you guys are interested, they will be playing "The Seven Samurai" at the walter reade theatre in lincoln center on October 14 at 7:30pm. I am definitely going, because it may be one of the few chances I have to see that on a big screen. Should be awesome. tickets are like 10 bucks I think.

I was never a big fan of Ran and the like, but Seven Samurai is one of the greatest movies of all time.
I agree that Fellini, Kurosawa, and Bergmann are the tops, but Bernardo Bertolucci, Roman Polanski, and Nagisa Oshima deserve mention.

I saw it and Ran at the Kennedy Center a few years back and it's just a whole other level of movie on the big screen. This is the way you'll remember the movie: the time you saw it in the theater.

And Reeshy's always good for a handy.

Akira Kurosawa's Dreams was an amazing collection of vignettes. It looks amazing on DVD. Pick it up if you get a chance.

My favorite one is when the boy goes out and sees the foxes and they give the mother a knife because he needs to kill himself now. I saw that for the first time in film class at the University of Georgia and I was blown away.

I finally rented Seven Samurai a couple months ago - blown away, I immediately watched all 3 hours again (Criterion). With commentary. I need to see these other flicks. If I ever hear that this is playing somewhere, I'll post it. Toshiro Mifune rules!

Shit, I completely missed the show at lincoln center. I remember seeing this topic a couple months ago and I just assumed it was playing in September so I figured it was too late. Damn my lazy ass for not checking up earlier.

Did anyone see Ikiru and enjoy it? That's the next Kurosawa film I'm going to watch I think. I liked Kagemusha, interesting to see his movies with color. Interesting when you imagine what Seven Samurai would have looked like with color.

I neglected to watch Seven Samurai until the night before I had to do a big performance back in 2004, and the movie managed to relax me and immerse me so effectively that I will never forget that night and the sheer enjoyment I felt watching that movie. One of the greatest, no doubt.

It's not one of Kurosawa's samurai or gangster movies, but it's a great exsistential story about the meaning of life, set in post-war Japan. It's been copied a few times, naturally, but this is the king daddy. Naturally.

I think Seven Samurai would have certainly looked worse in color. It was one of the best looking black and white movies ever. The cinematography for the final battle scene in the rain alone was a masterpiece. Don't go changing...

'Interesting' does not neccessarily mean good. It just means it would be interesting. Obviously, the film, all of his films, are fantastic and look good because they are in black and white. Black and white films seem to last well in comparison to color films from the 60's and 70's. Kagemusha was made in 1980, so I wouldn't be surprised if the color film was of a better quality than color would be in 1954.

Looking forward to Ikiru. And please, if anyone knows about any Kurosawa movies playing in New York City or the general tri-state area, let us know.
