I was thinking about this FRED discussion from a previous show.

I think one of the best is "Sweet Jane" by the Cowboy Junkies.

A couple of the worst are "Romeo and Juliet" by the Indigo Girls and "Tiny Dancer" by Tim McGraw.

Good try, but no thank you goes to "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Tori Amos.

Thoughts?

I posted this in another thread, but there is actually a cover album called "Light of Day: A Tribute to
Bruce Springsteen" which features Elvis Costello doing a countryish
version of "Brilliant Disguise", along with Joe Grushecky doing a
full-band acoustic blues version of "Light of Day", and Cowboy Mouth
doing a power-punk-pop version of "Born to Run".

Both Johnny Cash's and Marilyn Manson's versions of "Personal Jesus" are incredible.

I didn't post a worst yet. And I suspect that given the love that seems to be around for Gnarls Barkley, folks would be mad if I offered up his cover of the Violent Femme's Gone Daddy Gone as a worst, so I won't. Even though the original was essentially perfect and didn't need poking at (even by the Violent Femmes themselves who seem to have re-recorded a few of those classics in the last couple of years for some odd reason).

Agree 100%. I might have to go and listen to the copy I downloaded from iTunes.

Social Distortion doing 'Under My Thumb' is always pretty classic.

Some of the worst are on the Rage Against the Machine cover album--like 'Maggie's Farm' and 'Street Fighting' Man. Although their verison of 'The Ghost of Tom Joad' is incredible.

when stars go blue is my favorite ryan adams song. ive never heard that ass hat tim mcgraw's version and hopefully never will.

first and only time i saw phish they ended with been caught stealin. being relatively unfamiliar with their catalogue at the time (and still, really, compared to real diehards) it was a great end to an awesome introduction to the band. i used to have a boot of them doing a great version of Terrapin but some other dirty hippie stole it.

Any JGB cover of Dylan is fantastic.

BEST

The WHO doing an old blues number by Mose Allison - "Young Man Blues"
ANTHRAX covered many KISS songs, but the best is "Parasite"
Van Halen's version of "You Really Got Me" by The Kinks
Pearl Jam did a great version of an obscure WHO tune called "Leaving Here"

WORST

The Scorpions tryin' to do The WHO's "I Can't Explain"
Cyndi Lauper's version of "Another Brick in the Wall II" on the Wall in Berlin concert. (Although I DID like KORN's version a year or so ago)

ARGGGG!! That McGraw cover is awful, seriously awful.
But keeping with Ryan Adams, the Whiskeytown cover of Gram Parson's "A Song For You" is simply beautiful, maybe even better than the original.

This would get my vote for best. It takes the original and makes it nearly unlistenable in comparison.

I'd like to throw this one out for sheer awesomeness:

Transformer di Roboter's cover of Michael Jackson's Stranger in Moscow (http://www.transformerdiroboter.com/layerRechts/media/Stranger-in-moscow.mp3), using the Apple Startup sound as the baseline.

"In early 1999, IBM began a television advertisement campaign for its Lotus Notes software product that included the chorus of "Superman," sung by a female vocalist. This upset some R.E.M. fans, apparently unaware that the song was a cover.[citation needed]"

I searched up and down for that version for over a year. I wonder if it was not a version as I had thought, but like the Wikki reference says, just one chorus sung by female vocalists.

WORST: I will probably be slaughtered for these but I think that Lenny Kravitz's cover of American Woman is high school "spring concert" lame and I most covers of Knockin' on Heaven's Door...the GnR and Zevon recordings are waaaaaay too heavy-handed, although I heard a nifty reggae-inspired version on the radio the other day, but I'll be damned if I remember who it was.

GOOD: I hadn't realized that UB40's recording of Red Red Wine was a cover of Neil Diamond (of all people!) ... blew me away when I found out. (I prefer the UB40 cover to Neil. Sorry dude.)

Also Good, Jimi's version of the Bob Dylan-penned All Along the Watchtower ... I love Bob Dylan, but the way Jimi OWNED that song is what makes his version Superior to Bob's.

Joe Cocker's version of With A Little Help from My Friends has a similar anecdote to the one someone mentioned earlier about Jon Fogerty & Tina Turner about Ringo telling Joe that Joe's version was the best ... and, although I love Ringo, I have to agree. Joe Cocker's version is exactly on point.

I don't exactly have a "Best" ... mostly because my pop-music vocabulary is stunted and rather ... eccentric.

any cover of We're An American Band. some lo-lites are the All-accordion rock band Those Darn Accordions and The Village People

Americade (the band, not the motorcycle rally) covered the song for their 1982 album release Americade.

Autograph covered the song in November, 1985 and had it added to their second album That’s the Stuff in early 1986, replacing the original track #6, which was released in October, 1985. The "Up all night with Freddy King, I got to tell you pokers his thing" portion early in the song is replaced by "Up all night, sleep all day, I got to tell you that's how we play" for unknown reasons, possibly because of King's death ten years earlier.

Poison covered the song for their The Best of Poison: 20 Years of Rock compilation and replacing the line "And we proceeded to tear that hotel down" with the line "And Poison tore that hotel down."

Kid Rock covered the song during one year's MTV Video Music Awards, substituting "We'll help you party down" with "We'll take your panties down".

All-accordion rock band Those Darn Accordions parodied this song as "We're An Accordion Band", substituting many of the lyrics with references to famous accordion players such as Myron Florin and Flaco "The King" Jimenez". They replace "We'll help you party down" with "We'll help you polka down".

Jackyl covered the song for their 1998 compilation release Choice Cuts utilizing Jesse Dupree's unique vocal style.

The Village People cover the song as part of their live repertoire.

Singers Aly & AJ have covered this song for Randy Jackson’s Music Club: Volume One.

A lot of good ones I like have been mentioned, but...

Johnny Cash--Personal Jesus
Sinead O'Connor--Nothing Compares to you. For those of you who don't know, this was originally a Prince song. And say what you want about the woman, but this song kicks ass.

Pretty much every cover off the Nirvana Unplugged in New York album rocks, my favorite being Where did you Sleep Last Night.

I really try to block out the bad pop covers of good songs, or even bad/so-so songs that are made worse (for example Bobby Brown's My Preogative later done by Britney Spears). However, when Rihanna did the SOS song using the beat and I think its the chorus of Tainted Love, I decided right then and there that her music was shit.

I think everybody's cover of "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" sucks in relative degrees. GnR version is almost unbearable. Jerry and the Dead doing it is not so bad, but I still don't really like it. Dylan and the Dead, much better. Dylan, as good as you can get. To be honest, I don't really love the song to begin with.

I'm not sure this should even be mentioned but those 'mos in Rascal Flats covered " Life Is A Highway " which shouldn't have ever been made nevermind covered.

But equally as embrassing was the late great country/western singer Chris LeDoux's cover of that same song.

Staying w/ the country theme Clint Black did a good cover of " Desperado " and Garth Brooks did a good cover of other country songs " Night Rider's Lament " and " Callin' Baton Rouge ".

His cover of " Shameless " wasn;t bad either.

The best cover I ever heard/saw was 'A Day In The Life' by Howard Jones. It was at the Garden in 1987 and he used his encore to recognize Sgt. Pepper's 20th anniversary. He came out by himself. Everything had been removed from the stage. A keyboard dropped from the ceiling and he proceeded to do an amazing rendition of the song... Just him and his keyboard. It's too bad there isn't a recording of it somewhere.

I just bought a reissue record by a forgotten early 80's Nebraska group called The Better Beatles, who only released a single 7" in the day. They recorded a whole album worth of synth-punk versions of Beatles songs, all of which are sort of genius, but Lady Madonna is stupid fresh.

Morgan Fisher, ex keyboardist of Mott The Hoople, did a couple albums of new wave covers under the name The Hybrid Kids in the late 70's/early 80's. He did a Two Tone version of Kate Bush, a jingle version of The Sex Pistols and other such weirdness. His Devo-ish cover of Rod Stewart's Do Ya Think I'm Sexy is one of my all time favourite songs to play out. Always raises even hipster eyebrows. 2 minutes of twisted bliss, though it requires having your shit together to cue the next song in time.

Of course, the Residents cover of Hank Williams' Kawliga is pure brilliance with its Billy Jean backing loop. Infectious!

There are a million more, but one of my most retarded favourites is Duran Duran's cover of Make Me Smile (Come Up And See Me) by Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel. It is the B side of the picture disc version of The Reflex. It's a fairly straight read, but Simon delivers an over-the-topness that warms my heart in the same way that only a well appointed, new romantic neck-kerchief can.

saw good and bad in the same song. Last night on Conan some American Idol chick was on there covering "barracuda". The band was decent, took the song and made it a tad bit heavier sounding, not all that bad musically but her vocals just couldn't keep up. She kept trying to hits those screams that ann wilson does and just couldn't quite make it and the woman she had doing harmonies with her was just bad i think she might have been deaf it was that bad.

wow sharing that stones' cover wasn't really that necessary, i didn't even make it to 40 seconds. Who didn't tell them that they sounded like absolute shit, must be great to be the engineer/producer for that session. Just push record and then head to the bank. I'm a big fan of Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros cover of 'Redemption Song'. The spoken word intro is cool, and the music video is full of awesome cameos.

We may have a winner for worst cover ever. Certainly worst cover by best artist, maybe.

What the fuck, Beck? (http://www.prefixmag.com/media/beck/suzanne-leonard-cohen-cover-video/32439/)

Ok...I didn't mind the Velvet Underground stuff, but this is dogshit. Why the bloody hell would anybody try to cover Leonard Cohen?

Wait...did you just claim that Downtown Train by Rod Stewart was a good cover?

Despite the really poor sound, I always found it cool that The Yardbirds played a version of The Velvet Underground's "I'm Waiting For The Man" during their last U.S. tour in 1968. What makes it cool is that The Yardbirds thought enough of the song (from a then-not very popular, or should I say "well-known", band) to want to play it themselves-- much like when Jimi Hendrix did a live version of "Sgt. Peppers' Lonely Hearts Club Band" only days after the album came out.

Note the first few couple of bars of Zep's "How Many More Times" at the very end.

It wasn't the Stones. It was Jagger and Bowie. And yes. It was awful.
