NYC mulls ban on trans fats in eateries

NEW YORK - Three years after the city banned smoking in restaurants,
health officials are talking about prohibiting something they say is
almost as bad: artificial trans fatty acids.

The city health department unveiled a proposal Tuesday that would
bar cooks at any of the city's 24,600 food service establishments from
using ingredients that contain the artery-clogging substance, commonly
listed on food labels as partially hydrogenated oil.

Artificial trans fats are found in some shortenings, margarine and
frying oils and turn up in foods from pie crusts to french fries to
doughnuts.

I actually support this, despite the snotty thread title. I steer clear of these ingredients as much as possible already, for this exact reason. But expect prices to go up slightly, because the cheap stuff is usually the stuff thats bad for you. Trans fats are easily replaced in most recipes, and wont cause any major havoc in the food biz. What will likely happen too is major food manufacturers will eliminate the stuff so as not to lose the lucrative NYC market, so it may actually make shopping easier for guys like me.

I'm also sure that some genius inspector will find trans fats in my soap and fine me $400. Welcome to NYC.

Dude..I have gout also and its horrible when it flares up.

With that said though, I hate anytime the government decides what is good for us or not. I can see the smoking ban, because of second hand smoke..but if someone wants to eat garbage, then I dont think the government should have a say so in that.

I have found that cherry juice extract relieves the pain if your getting a flareup. You can usually find it at any health food store.

It seems to work better than the medication I was prescribed when diagnosed with gout actually.

For people who are actively aware of what's going in to their body and whatnot this is good. However if this is ijust a minor segway into something larger then it's pretty retarded.

if you can't exhibit a basic amount of self restraint in not gorging on shitty food then you might as well crack another bag of Lays because there will never be a law that will improve the you eat.

I can sympathize to a degree on the issue but at this point overweight people need to stop using mass marketing and advertising of foods that are a detriment to their health as a crutch for their gluttony.
