View Full Version : Is "boxed wine" considered "crap"?

Lately, I have been getting boxed wine, because you get more for less money and it is far easier to handle and store and its convienient too.
But I have been talking to friends who seem to think "real" wine comes in bottles with corks. They seem to be equating the boxed wine with poor quality wines.
I am just wondering; is it crap? Is it poorer quality? I hope not because I think its very cool and tasty and do not want to be considered as "low class" if I serve a guest boxed wine.

What do you think?

it's the age-old argument of vices, quality or quantity

9 times out of 10 ill vote quality, but it all depends on the situation

The quality seems fine to me though. Am I mistaken?

Because they know all they solda ya was a guaranteed piece of shit. That's all it is, isn't it? Hey, if you want me to take a dump in a box and mark it guaranteed, I will. I got spare time. But for now, for your customer's sake, for your daughter's sake, ya might wanna think about buying a quality product from me.

i didn't even know you could get wine in a box. i would say it's the same product as in the bottle. i had posted an article about the "wine business" a year or so ago and even the people who considered themselves to be the finest wine tasters were picking the cheaper wines on occassion so what it comes down to is " do you like the wine? " and everyone else can take a fucking flying leap

the container isn't the issue. whether it comes in a box or a bottle, you like shitty wine.

I tried it because the guy in the store said it was just as good, and it was much easier for me to lug down the steps for my my wife, who likes to get gallon cases of Carlo Rossi White Zinfandel. I got a box of red wine from a different maker for me and a box of Zinfandel for her and put in the an empty bottle for her and she could not tell the difference. I like my wine cold, so I keep a box of red wine in the refrigerator and take a big glass when needed and it seems (to my tastes) to be excellent. I know a "purist" who says they will only drink from a bottle and would refuse a glass from a box. I am wondering if I (even though I like it) am being "unsophisticated" because I am not a "serious" wine drinker.

It's about the BUZZ not the container or the quality of it. If you drink enough $100 a bottle wine you couldn't tell if you were drinking Thunderbird after you got your buzz on so have some good shit first, then swith to the cheap stuff when you get hammered. Better yet, go for the vodka !

Enjoy your BUZZ...

blackbird...I too buy wine by the box. I like reds, Shiraz is
my favorite and I started drinking this one particular Australian
red. Well I was buying it by the bottle (750 ml for $10) and then
I discovered it came in a box (2 litre for $24) cost works out to about
the same, but it is more convenient.

I say who gives a shit as long as you like it.

Some new boxed wine brands are supposedly of higher quality than the usual lower cost+quality stuff.

At least one brand (the one with the rabbit in its logo?), is said to be a mid-range offering. It seems to be using its metallic shiny packaging as a "cool" selling feature.

Box packaging is also known as being more enviro-friendly than usual bottles.

(speaking of "shiny", reminds me of hilarious Ron suggestion of "....or i just put something shiny on my cock")

Dude - I am not a "young" person, probably older than you. Can you really say that anyone drinks alcohol of any kind because the really love the "taste" ? If that were true, we'd all be talking about fuggin Welches Grape Juice has earthy overtones, nice tannins, and apricot and green grass and all that fruh-fruh wine shit. It's all about the BUZZ no matter how you slice it.

Mandatory wise ass comment: Technically, since it is a liquid, it would be considered piss.

OK, now that I got that out of the way, here's my $0.02. One thing that I've noticed in my experience in the working world is that the small talk at business dinners, especially with an international crowd, almost always boils down to discussions of wine and travel experiences, preferably outside the US. Since I've never been a big wine drinker I've had to learn enough to fake it (but I've also learned to enjoy wine a little more as well.) Based on that study here's my advice:

Listen to Funkman, Suggums, Badorties, et al. and drink what you like when it's just you & the wife. Boxed wine is usually considered downmarket and it is usually pretty basic stuff although as Silas pointed out, there are some "good" wines starting to be sold that way. See link

http://www.slate.com/id/2146720/

If you're worried about what other people think (and there probably are some situations where that is necessary, but not many) have the guy at the store recommend a couple of good wines which you probably can get for about $15/bottle and keep them for "company" as my Grandma used to say.

One last point - although it is what you like that matters most, I think Epo is right in pointing out that red wines are designed to be poured down your gullet at room temperature (sangria excepted). Most white wines can be chilled but you're probably better off trying the red right off the counter.

I've had both good and bad boxed wine. My dad typically buys wine in a box, but the liner bag inside adds a distinct manufactured plastic taste to the wine, while another brand he tried once did not (I don't remember what brands, I'm not a wine drinker so I don't really pay attention to brands when I do drink it). My opinion is if you like it, drink it. Who cares what others think.

Also, younger red wines can even be served cooler. Beaujolais Nouveau is usually served cold.

Regarding boxes of wine, if you can't tell the difference between a box of wine, and wine in a bottle, then why spend more money on the bottle? If you feel uneasy about serving a box of wine to your guest, why not fill up an empty wine bottle with the box wine, and keep the bottle in the frig. Either that or buy a wine caraffe or something.

That being said, there is a difference in cheap box wine, and a good bottle of wine, but it does take some time and patience to actually taste the difference. I think most people think they know more about wine than they do, and my guess is if you put box wine, a $10 bottle, and a $100 bottle in front of people, 9 times out of ten they wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

If the question is "Is boxed wine considered crap?", the answer is yes. If the
question is "Should I not drink boxed wine which I enjoy because other
people think it's crap?", the answer's no.

If you are going to drink boxed wine, I'd stick with a light, fruity wine. Don't bother with Cab or Merlot or Chard- the wine will be noting but fruit, lacking complexity.

If you enjoy it keep buying it. I always buy my wine in a bottle but once at a party I had a glass of wine that I really enjoyed. When I asked my g/f what it was she showed me the box. First and actually only time I had boxed wine and I really liked it. The box wine makes sense when throwing a party, you get so much more.

A lot of boxed wines are zinfindels, any wine drinker will tell you zinfindells is not a real wine. Plus your not suppose to drink red wine chilled. Whit is to be chilled, red to be served room temp.
I'm not a fan of wine, but I've heard one good thing about it. If you take the bag out of the box, and put it in a backpack, you can easily affix a hose that allows you to pour drinks. This (according to those who've tried it) is perfect for outdoor events, such as street festivals.
