DAMN!

Going to Tower used to (I know "used") be a ritual for me. I could always find obscure artists that my local record store didn't carry, plus the Villiage store was open till midnight. The staff was great, knew their shit. My local record store never heard of the artist I was looking for, Tower had 4 copies.

But with Amazon, they blow away Tower's selection and I dont even have to leave the house. You can listen to samples of the songs, plus you can get used stuff cheap if you're still not sure you'll like it.

It was also sad to see Sam Greedy go out of business. I've been going there since I was a kid. At least there's still Vintage Vinyl in Fords NJ........For now.

Best record store:

Bert's CD's and Records in Newark Delaware.

I don't think they have porn though.

I saw this today too! Black guys standing with signs that the store is closing! When all these stores close, what will we do, only be able to buy stuff in Walmart or eBay or Amazon? Its a shame really. Maybe they should have been more online or whatever, but many late Friday nights, after everything else was closed, could you go to Tower and buy a movie or smut mag or magazine, books, etc. This blows!

I loved their hours. Many times a couple days before xmas I'd go to Tower
at midnight to get last minute cool stuff. And it wouldn't be crowded that
late.

The only places I buy music in a store are a local place called Earfood and Plan 9 in Charlottesville. They both carry used vinyl and CD's, as well as new stuff. I don't think I've been to a national chain in ten years.

tower records was awesome. i havent been in a couple years, but the prices were pretty good. i recall that the first week or two a cd came out they were $12. i spent so much money in that place throughout high school and college it bothers me.

also there was a fake rocker chick that worked there that i found attractive.

We stopped by our local Tower, feeling very fly for having learned about the closure on the interweb- currently they are running 10% discounts on all CD's, which means they're still cheaper on Amazon- However, 20% off all books and 30% off magazines- I stocked up on Tattooed Biker Whores and a NAMBLA bi-monthly special for Fez.

well, now i understand why tower's going under. i went there today. i figured i'd pick up some deals.
Nope, none to be had. 10% off on cd's. big deal, that's something done on a one day hiliday sale. you'd never think they were out of buisness this week.

Seriously there is no deals on their dvds or music...10% off the original price is still more than amazon or Best Buy. I agree they have more obscure stuff, bur if you're looking for a relatively mainstream album you can do better elsewhere.

i dont have any tower stories to share, so ill share one from a manager, who worked there for 16 years and was telling me about it last night:

when he came into the DC store as a new manager, they had lost over 10,000 cds to theft in one inventory cycle, out of around 100,000 cds. most of the time there was nothing they could do about it.

he also met his now-wife down at a store in new orleans, pretty cool

full agreeance that they brought it on themselves. Prices are way too high. A 10 yr old CD should not cost the same as a new cd. The staff always seems condescending. I'm sorry you are running a register at a chain retail music store that has installed a false sense of cool because they have the local music press papers in the lobby. The only good things about them is the huge magazine selection(odd ball hot rod and tattoo mags, etc), some of the obscure stuff, and every once in great while they would run a huge sale where you could pick up some good disc on the cheap. Either way people really should patronize whatever local CD stores are left.

I was in college in Boston when Tower opened up the street from Newbury Comics. It was like McDonalds building a restaurant in the parking lot of your local burger joint.
