After 9/11, how in the FUCK do we let even a SMALL aircraft slip through and do this?

This is unbelieveable. I know it seems to be an accident right now, but what if it was another attempt. A small aircraft packed with explosives can do an amazing amount of damage. This is rediculous.

I hope very few people got hurt. I bet heads will roll from this little incident.

What exactly would you propose be done ?

How much air traffic do you think there is over a major city like NYC ? Shutting down the airspace over it would be a major pain in the ass and not really feasable.

Kind of wierd its on the 11th.

Yeah, how the fuck is a plane flying low over NYC with no radio contact? I know it seems to be a small plane, but WTF?? I thought airspace was restricted.

Hello,

First I hope everyone as well as friends and
family are safe. I am watching the news on this and Channel 5(fox),
Channel 2(CBS) and Channel 9(WHATEVER) here in NY are the biggest bunch
of fucking ass holes. I hate them. The way they try to make it sound
worst then what it is. Channel 5 actually said that they are
steaming the news on their web site in case that your tv is not working
right!!!? THERE IS NO FUCKING ANTENNA ON THIS BUILDING AND THE FUCKING
BUILDING DID NOT COME DOWN.

Then I switch to channel 2
and they are talking with a eye witness and the anchor..(which I wish
he hang on to and jump into the ocean) asked what the person saw, the
eye witness tell them she belives it was helicopter that was
loosing comtrol. The anchor then says "Are you sure it was just 1 plane
and not 2" TRYING TO GET THE FEAR OUT AND MAKE IT MORE THEN WHAT IT IS.

FUCKING NEWS SUCKS BALL.

Hope everyone is ok and everyone gets home safe.

SEE YA!!

This just goes to show that after all the posturing and all the "we're doing this, this, and this to make us safer" this country still hasn't learned shit from 9/11. What happened to absolutely NO air traffic over NYC? What if this was some nutjob with a bomb onboard? No one in authority knew of this plane until it hit? That's just great. We really have make terrific strides 5 years later.

Didn't they restrict airspace over Manhattan for quite some time after 9/11? I can't remember if it was just while all planes were grounded or after flights were allowed again...

Yankees pitcher dies as plane hits NYC building

Two dead; no evidence of terrorism, officials say

NEW YORK - A small plane with New York Yankees pitcher Cory Lidle aboard crashed into a 50-story condominium tower Wednesday on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, killing two people and raining flaming debris on sidewalks, authorities said. NBC News confirmed Lidle was one of the two dead.

A law enforcement official in Washington, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Lidle was on the plane. And Federal Aviation Administration records showed the single-engine plane was registered to the athlete, who just days ago — after the Yankees’ humiliating elimination from the playoffs — told reporters that he was getting his pilot’s license.

Lidle's passport was reportedly found on the street below the crash site.

Earlier reports had cited four bodies found; the city’s medical examiner’s office later confirmed only two people had died.

The FBI and the Homeland Security Department said there was no evidence it was a terrorist attack. “The initial indication is that there is a terrible accident,” Homeland Security spokesman Russ Knocke said. Nevertheless, fighter jets were sent aloft over U.S. cities as a precaution, the Pentagon said.

The twin-engine plane came through a hazy, cloudy sky and hit the 20th floor of The Belaire — a red-brick tower overlooking the East River, about five miles from the World Trade Center — with a loud bang, touching off a raging fire that cast a pillar of black smoke over the city and sent flames shooting from four windows on two adjoining floors.

Firefighters shot streams of water at the flames from the floors below and put the blaze out in less than an hour.

Large crowds gathered in the street in the largely wealthy New York neighborhood, with many people in tears and some trying to reach loved ones by cell phone.

“I was worried the building would explode, so I got out of there fast,” said Lori Claymont, who fled an adjoining building in sweatpants.

Bodies found on ground, in apartment
Police initially said two people were killed. WNBC reported two bodies found on the ground, one of which was strapped to an aircraft chair. Two bodies were also found in an apartment in the building, the TV station said.

Young May Cha, a 23-year-old Cornell University medical student, said she was walking back from the grocery store down 72nd Street when she saw an object out of the corner of her eye.

“I just saw something come across the sky and crash into that building,” she said. Cha said there appeared to be smoke coming from behind the aircraft, and “it looked like it was flying erratically for the short time that I saw it.”

“The explosion was very small. I was not threatened for my life,” she added.

Richard Drutman, a professional photographer who lives on the 11th floor, said he was talking on the telephone when he felt the building shake.

Not a big fan or follower of baseball - so was this guy a major player? I found an article of some dude from the Phillies going off on the guy:

There's been a war of words between an ex-Phillie and several members of the Fightin' Phils for the past few days. After he left, Lidle said, "On the days I'm pitching, it's almost a coin flip as to know if the guys behind me are going to be there to play 100 percent," regarding his time with the Phillies.

Well, ho ho, some current members of the Phillies didn't like it, including Arthur Rhodes, who called Lidle a scab -- he was a replacement player in '94, which is why he's not in the players' union or in video games (except as "Felix Berger") -- and also revealed his sweet tooth:
"The only thing Cory Lidle wants to do is fly around in his airplane and gamble.... He doesn't have a work ethic. After every start, he didn't run or lift weights. He would sit in the clubhouse and eat ice cream."
Lidle realized that, well, gee, I sound like an asshole, and went back on his comments. He said he meant the team was distracted because of all the trade rumors and it was hard to focus. Okay, sure, Cory. But, whatever, he did the right thing and apologized (kind of) and changed his story. He didn't want to continue to be an asshole (unlike a certain cheesesteak seller who shall remain nameless).

But Arthur Rhodes wasn't done, firing this salvo:
Rhodes amplified those sentiments last night. "If you look at it, he only pitched two good games," he said. "Before that, he wasn't pitching too good."

I actually am a Yankee fan, but the fact that you think that has anything to do with anything makes you retarded. There are things that go beyond the realm of sports. I don't think it matters what team you root for... No sane Yankee fan is rooting for John Lester to die of cancer. Cory Lidle, the man, not the Yankee, was 34 years old and left behind a wife and child. Where you find "humor" in this is confusing... but it leads me to believe that you're an attention whore. Hence, I'm done with you.

I went on ebay about 1 1/2 hours after i heard it was cory lidle and punched in his name and looked up the newly listed items. Amazingly hundreds of items rookie cards, autographed balls going for up to $280 and the worst of all people with listings for cory lidle memorial shirts, are you serious.People with just regular listings with nothing to do with baseball with cory lidle in the title. WOW it's amazing how people exploit tragedy.

So, i'm driving home from the supermarket near me when i got a call on my work cell phone. 'Blocked call' it says. Hmmm.. well even though i'm off (i got injured at work and have been off for the past week or so and will be for a few weeks more) I still have some duties to carry out.
I answer and it's a reporter from newsday asking for a statement on todays crash. So like the asshole I am, I answer "So why are you bothering me? She asked if this was the TSA number for NY and I tell her that she's calling me on my cell phone, that I'm off, but that I do work for TSA.
"Oh; can you give me a statement then?"
"No." I replied.
"may I ask what you do for them?"
"No" I replied again.
There was a bit of silence as she was either writing this down or thinking of something else to say when I asked how she got my cell phone. "It was given to me. Can you give me the number of someone who can give me a statement?
"No." I replied again.
At this point I should have hung up but I like long silences so i just stayed on the line till she hung up. Now I'm left to wonder who gave my cell phone to the media and why? I'm the ass end of the notification chain when I'm on the job. I'm out injured. How would I know anything?

According to some things I heard on WFAN, the wife was getting on an American airlines jet to LAX just as he was taking off in his plane. So she had no idea what happened until at least 8PM tonight.

Fox is saying he didn't have a license yet and that you can't with only a years worth of experience, and that the Yankees required that he fly with an instructor if he was going to fly.

Not very detailed. I was hoping to see what kind of manoeuvres he was doing. From the descriptions, the manoeuvres were pretty strange, but it did appear that he tried to steer away from the building.

Kinda looks like he might have been trying to ditch it in the river.
