Just started today. It's constantly working. I tried deciphering active tasks and programs, but I don't know shit about these computers. Help me before it burns up!!

on Control Panel/ScreenSaver/Power Settings you can have the hard drive shut down after a certain amount of time

not sure if it will shut down if something internally is using it even though you are not using the computer

Do the basics. Virus, adware and spyware check. Defrag and error check first. Backup anything you think is important. Just in case the drive is on its way out.

Assuming you're using Windows XP, and you've done the spyware/virus checking stuff, the other possibilities are that you have too little RAM and too many processes running, which require the computer to use the hard drive (swap file).

The other thing is to turn off Indexing on the hard drive. If you don't regularly search for files or in files on your computer, then you won't be missing anything. Do this by right clicking on the drive (in My Computer or explorer) and unchecking "Allow Indexing Service to index this drive". Apply this to all sub-folders and files. This doesn't prevent you from searching, just may take a little longer.

Lastly, defrag periodically.

Download Hijackthis. Run it and post the results.
