I know some other people have posted on the board recently about crime in the district. This summer the local news made a big deal about it, and I believe most of the summer was considered a crime emergency by the police chief. Today there is an aritcle in the post about crime in the city, talking about how robberies are mostly now concentrated on the areas seeing the most growth (big shock there).

Link URL:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/10/12/AR2006101201813.html

The crime isn't as bad as it was in the 80s and mid 90s, but the robberies per capita are still twice that of New York (6.36 vs 3.04). My girlfriend used to live in Columbia Heights, which is currently the has the highest number of robberies, and I never liked leaving her place after sunset. Walking to my car always made me nervous at night. For people not familar with the area, right now they are building a lot of new condos and shops, but the place is still mostly old housing. A lot of young professionals seem to move there because its actual affordable when compared to other areas like Dupont and Adams Morgan.

I lived up by the cathedral for many years and never once did I feel afraid or threatened. That being said, I couldnt't even think about buying a home in that area.

Even with the crime rate increasing, I miss living in DC. It sure beats living in suburban Sterling, VA.

You're also much more likely to get attacked with a machete in Columbia Heights as compared to other parts of the city.

Whatever. I'm not much of a city dweller. Hopefully, I'll be able to get out soon. It wouldn't be so bad except foor the almost complete lack of decent grocery stores.
