I've decided to be the last one to jump on the bandwagon and hang up my old CD player. I'm looking for advice. How long do they last? Like, if I listen 40-60 hours a week (at work), will it burn out on me eventually? Cuz if I do get one, I'll probably use it an awfull lot and don't want it dying on me. If I could at least get a couple years out of it would be nice. Also, does the brand matter? I can get a deal on a

Creative Labs 30 GB Zen Vision

but I'm not sure if they're any good. I'd stick to a flash player, unless you're really not worried about mobility. 30gb is a lot, but it is nice to have as a external harddrive. You can get 6gb with an expansion slot SanDisk Sansa e270, so its actually 8gb if you max it out. I've had problems with longevity with my harddrive players. The sandisk runs like 10-15 hours on a fully charged internal rechargable battery. The creative player is really nice. Its probably fine if you never want to use it for running or being really active outside. I haven't found a real quality gap once you get in the 150-200 dollar range of mp3 players. It seems like the players other than Apple's have caught up and started to offer much more for a lesser price. Good luck man.

The other companies have always offered more features for less money than Apple, who was a late comer to the party. Steve Job's strategy was to simplify the process for acquiring music and using the player. This is what pushed the Ipod to the top.

I have had MP3 players from the very first commercially available one (Eiger) to Samsung, Creative and Rio. I had a Rio Karma 20gig that crashed on me after 1 1/2 years (out of warranty). Loved the thing, but it did make me wary of hard disk based players.

My Creative was fine, but I retired it when I got the Karma. When that died, went back to the Creative, but a flood in my place ruined it.

Creative was #1 before Apple, but continually getting bitched slapped by Apple now. They had a model called the Zen Nano before Apple. But Apple yanked the name away.

If you don't need a big screen, the hot non-Ipod player right now is the SanDisk Sansa, which has been bumped to 8gigs of flash memory. SanDisk is primarily a flash memory manufacturer.

I had been using my PDA with a large memory card as a media player until I picked up the Inno last week. I can store about 80 songs plus 25 hours of XM content and the live satellite. And it's smaller than an Ipod. I am loving it so far. Someone posted an FCC picture earlier today on a blog site for what appears to be a nextgen Inno or Helix, probably with more memory. The Inno with say 4or 8gig of memory and video support would be perfect.
