I know this is going to start out like every question asked in High School Sex Ed, but . . I have this friend who was convicted of a DUI in the US. This person now has to travel to Canada for work. We both have heard there are issues regarding people who have had DUIs entering Canada. Has anyone every experienced this. Is there anything this person can do, ie write a letter, pay a fee, anything that will allow them to enter Canada. I know there are a couple lawyers on this board, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
I've had a DUI (over 10 years ago now) and I've been to Canada about a thousand times since with no issues. I go to Canada a lot for work as well and it's never even come up.

Actually on his most recent trip (driving) to Canada, my bf got turned away
because he has a 15 year old DUI on his record. Apparently you can pay a
couple hundred bucks and they'll let you in - I don't know if you can do it on
the spot. He's flown in to Canada without any problems, however.
I guess it just depends on whether you're the lucky one who they actually
check up on.
He's actually probably going to be in the city next week and plans on going
to the embassy (consulate, whatever you call it) here to see if there's some
way to get it taken care of without paying - apparently they forgive you if
it's over a certain number of years old.
Of course, this is sort of hearsay. I guess the logical thing would have been
for me to google an answer rather than just spread rumors, though the fact
remains that yes, he did recently get turned away at the border due to his
15 year old DUI.

In fact most charges you get in the US (if not ... murder or rape or the like) wont even show up in Canada and vice versa.
