maybe this doenst belong in this forum, if so i am sorry. ok, here goes.

As you may or may not know Tuchas and I have been thinking about moving down to Charlotte, NC. I have been looking at jobs down there since July. Well last night I got an offer from a small drywall company which has a lot of potenial but not alot to pay me. they offered me well below what i am worth (not just NYC standards but by Charlotte standards). I knew i would not be making the $$$ i am here and did the research and I should be making about 10,000 less there than here. needless to say that this offcer was 30,000 less than what i am making now.

i am on the fence about making the move. I do hate my job (i am still good at it) and have the chance (by taking a test) over the winter to become a NYC carpenter. the pay is good, pension and benefits are great. My other option is to find a job like the one i was offered here.

the case for going:

i hate taking the train in and out of work, i grew tired of how expensive it is to live here, i dont think i can ever afford to buy a house here

the case for staying:

its NYC, the food, the interaction with the peeps on this board, the stand up comedy class that i want to take over the winter, the accessibility of everything, family, friends, etc

if we stay here we would move closer to the city (hoboken, bay ridge, or the city itself) and take full advantage of living here.

any advise buddays?

I know the feeling of wanting to move but being affraid because you will be leaving so much behind. I Would say make the move to Carolina's but only if the job is 100% what you want and the pay is going to afford you things you cant have here. I wouldnt take this job you been offered. Not only will you be moving away, but you would be taking a huge paycut and with a company that cant afford you now may not be around in a year or less. Then what? You will be in a different state struggling to find new work. I say only make the move if you know that you will still have a job in a year, 2 years, 5 years etc... This way you will be working for a company making more comey then up here and creating a life for yourself and your family.

Good luck

By the way, you said ifyou do stay here you will move to Hoboken or the city itself. How will you afford to do that if you say you could never afford to buy a home in this area? I'm confused because either you do make a lot of money up here or you dont. But if you could afford to live in manhatten then fuck the carolinas stay here!!!

Well, do you have to do the sex offender registry thing all over again or will it just transfer down there?

*looks at which forum this is in*

Fuck! Fuck! Fuck!

Well, he did say he wasn't sure it was in the right forum, so it's probably okay, but I guess I should be serious. Don't go. If your heart's here and it's that much less money, you might as well hold out for a better opportunity if you do want to move.

Going through some of the same exact shit here myself right now. If you don't feel close to 100% on the choice, it's not the right one. Definitely counter the offer as it is normal to do so and explain everything you did here to them. But don't expect a small company to have that much flexibility on pay early. I suppose that the upside to going there would be a bigger voice and potential in the end, but these things are only possible. Stay with what you have until you know the offer you receive is the one.

To give a little perspective, I recently turned down a pretty big op bc I'd lose 2 weeks of vacaction (from 4 to 2 due to starting all over with a comp) but an increase in pay of about 10k. It just didn't feel right and I do a full week of charity work a year so a hit to my vacation like that hurts too. I countered but they couldn't do much bc it's a small startup company that isn't even public yet so stock options weren't offered but "possible" in the future and even the VP only got 3 weeks of vaca. I turned it down and then my company decided I was worth a lot more then they were paying me and gave me a raise that easily exceeded this offer and I keep my vaca. Along with this, my stock options I would have had to cash out on grew 5 bucks since this time as well.

Perhaps I'm a little off on your situation, but I think it should be even more solid in your mind since this job change also involves a huge move. Hope this helps you yankee fuckwad.
