I haven't turned the heat on at all this year. I've been using two space heaters to keep the bed room and the living room warmed, but I haven't turned the heat on for fear of a huge bill, especially since I'm trying to save money.

Am I being cheap and paranoid?

Have you figured out if using your heat is cheaper than the electric on those heaters? Those things use a lot of electricity.
Those thermostats with a time are fucking awesome. Leaves your place at a low temp during times no one is there and you can set it to come up to living temp on your way home.

I try not to use the heat unless I really need to. Oil sucks.

I would say yes. Penny wise dollar foolish. I dont know for sure but I would bet that the those heaters pull a lot of electricity and will be just as expensive. Plus oil has gone down since last year. Another thing, when those stupid little things create a fire then you will have to pay more money for insurance and all your shit will be burned.

We finally turned on the heat last week, even though we were trying to hold out until November. It blows. We have a payment plan for our oil bill, and it TRIPLED this year from $50 to $150 month. Not like it's already expensive to live in NJ. Even though oil is cheaper now, we won't see that difference until they readjust the rate next year.

And I agree with a lot of other people in this thread. Space heaters are a huge draw on your electric, and are probably more expensive to run for a couple hours a day than your furnace costs to run for twice as long.

I haven't turned the heat on yet. When I do, I only run it night and shut it off when I leave for work in the morning.

Why have you guys have any need for heat? Even using space heaters seems a bit extreme and would just cost too much money.

My place hasn't dropped below 55 or so yet this year. It's usually about 60 when I wake up and 62 when I go to bed. I live in NJ and have had no problems at all with the weather.

When I come home I just put on a sweatshirt if I am cold and when I sleep I get under a massive down comforter that I have and stay really warm all night. In the morning I get right out of my bed and into a hot shower. I get changed in the bathroom so I have heat from the shower to keep me warm.

I don't think I'll be putting on the heat until it starts to get into the 40s in my condo, and that's only so the lines don't freeze up. I usually keep my place around 65 in the cold winter months for the time I get home from work until I go to bed and maybe put it up to 68 for the hour I get out of bed and out the door, I can't be paying for anything warmer, wearing heavy clothes is a lot cheaper.

Disclaimer: when my chick comes over I am sure she'll make me turn it on for her on the weekends, but as soon as she's gone it's going right back off.

Just do like me and move into a nice little apartment with heat and hot water included in the rent. Average temperature in here is 75, 73 at night time and sometimes peaks to 77 in the afternoon. Shorts and T-Shirt in the winter. Gotta love it.

Missy is right about the drapes. We have a big sliding glass door in our condo and it gets chilly up here earlier than it did at our old place. Anyhow, these drapes have a rubberized lining on the back to keep the heat out in the summer and the cold out in the winter. We had to take them down for 2 days while we were having work done near the window and we noticed a considerable difference in how chilly it got in here.

Between the drapes ('bout $40 at Linens N Things for a floor length pair) and the plastic wrap you should be able to keep the drafts out quite nicely.
