View Full Version : Near Death

Dave's story earlier got me thinking, does anyone have any legitimate near death experiences from childhood?

When I was three I was pretending to be Robin Hood and was climbing in and out of my deck stairs in the backyard (the kind of stairs that only have a board where you can step, but not a back board ie if you are standing on a step you can kick your foot through and not hit anything between the step above) and halfway up I was climbing back onto the steps coming from behind them and I guess I slipped. My head got caught inbetween two steps and so I was hanging. My mother had one of those motherly instincts I guess since she hadn't seen me in a while, and it just happened to be a minute or so after I fell into hanging by my neck on the deck. She found me miraculously and had to hold me up for a while cause she wasn't strong enough to get me out since I was up so high. She eventually got me out and saved my life. It was traumatic for me and I still remember it, but I can't imagine how unbelievably terrifying it was for my mother.

Anyone else have an awful near death experience when you were a little kid?

I don't know how near death this is, but when I was a kid, there was this gated off place that was basically a sewer run-off that formed a lake, right by my house. So, in the winter time it used to freeze over. Me and my friend would hop the fence and play around on the ice.

One time, there was this hole in the middle of the ice, so we decided to drop this 15 foot branch in to see how deep it was. And the branch goes in no problem, so we realize this lake is deeper than 15 feet. So, we were like, let's get the fuck out of here. So we start running off the ice, and I turn back, and just see my friend drop through the ice. I can't swim, so i'm freaking out because I know I have to go back for him. My friend is screaming like a mad man, "hypothermia, hypothermia." As I go back for him, I fall right through.

I totally thought I was going to die, somehow we managed to get back, me doggie paddling through ice.

Then covered in sewage water, we had to walk back home. Our hair and clothes were frozen solid by the time we got home. In retrospect it is pretty funny, but I honestly thought I was going to die in that sewer lake.

I didn't really have one myself, but one of my kids did. When my oldest son still lived with his mom and his sister (he was around 10 and she 8), my daughter fell off a deck into an icy pond. The water was so cold, she couldn't swim. My son was able to pull her out, saving her life. It made the papers, and he got a plaque from the Boys & Girls club.

I didn't really ever come close to death as a kid but when I was six my father fell down a flight of stairs and landed on me. I was just standing at the foot of the stairs and I heard this
thunderous crash; I looked up and there was my dad barreling down the
stairs towards me. I was a tough sonofabitch though, he dislocated his shoulder or something but I was absolutley fine.

When I was around 5 or 6 I was upstairs in my house. In my right hand was a fairly large suitcase, containing a very large amount of Matchbox cars, toys, etc. The doorbell had just rung, and my sister went to go get it, and told me to wait until she came back. So she went downstairs to go answer it, and I remembered that it was probably the pizza guy, cuz we had ordered it about and hour ago. And, being that I was a tubby little fuck, I decided to go down by myself. With my suitcase on the side where the railing for the stairs was.

To make a long story short, I fell down about 15 stairs, head over heals, with a heavy suitcase tumbling alongside me. I ended up with a bump on my head, but my mom kept telling me I was lucky that I didn't break my neck.

O, and the pizza was delicious. : )

I was hit by a speeding motorist while riding my bike just before my 7th birthday. I was knocked 20' in the air, landed on my head - and was just about "road kill". Blood oozing out of my ear and other places. Leg broke and snapped through the skin.

The police on the scene debating about having me hauled away in an ambulance or meat wagon.

I was unconcious and snapped out of it 3 days later with no idea what happened. End result: compound fracture to the leg, and fractured skull in a few places.

This was in 1976 - ions before bike helmets, and back in the day when a 7 year old was allowed out.

guess i was 5 or 6 in an uncle's pool at a large family gathering. i got near the edge of the shallow section where it drops down towards the deep. i took a few steps down to where the water was over my head and i started panicking and couldn't reach the edge to grab onto. now that i think about it it was kind of amazing that i remembered the 1 2 3 with the fingers. i could just get my hand out of the water and fight to not go any deeper, i got to 3 and i couldn't hold my breath any longer, just then my aunt grabbed my hand and pulled me out.

i was gagging and fighting for breath and she actually at first got pissed at me like i was fooling around.

at a different uncle's party nobody noticed my 2 year old nephew go into the deep section except my oldest brother "yeah gorgeous george", he was around 13 or 14 at the time. george dove in and pulled him from the bottom of the deep section.

it sounds like people were really neglectful, i believe there is some of that but it just takes such a short time for you to take your attention away in order for trouble to happen. i was with my daughter in a park, she was approx 4 years old. we're on the swings and playset and something got my attention for what seemed like no more than 5 seconds. i turned to check on my daughter and i could not find her anywhere near where we just were. i couldn't believe it and started getting a little panicky.

i took a look to a group of spring rides(animals on big springs) about 100 yards away and there she was. as soon as i took my attention off her she must have made a run towards the spring rides. to this day i would swear on a stack of grand funk albums that i didn't take my attention away for more than ten seconds but it defies logic, i don't think she could have done the 100 yard dash in 10 seconds at age 4...

edit: how'd i forget this. i was in a head-on collision in 87' where the guy in the other car got killed. i guess i don't believe it's a 'near death' experience because i git some serious inhuries but nothing life threatening. fyi: it wasn't my fault "i only mention that because it's ususally something people are curious about"

This isn't really near death, but it's something that's always been in my mind...

When I was a kid there was a lake by my house (Oakland Gardens in Bayside, anyone familiar?). The lake freezes over in the winter, but it isn't safe to walk on. I was about 14 and me and my friends decided to do some skating with our sneakers on the lake, which was a REALLY stupid idea that I wouldn't recommend to anyone.

Well, while we were playing I felt a small crack below my feet and I panicked and I started to run off the lake. Because I was panicking I didn't take the same way off the lake as I did onto the lake (the way we took onto the lake was pretty solid ice) and with every step I felt ice cracking below me. I remember CLEAR AS DAY that the cracks below me looked like spider webs.

I just kept moving and made it back to solid ground safely without incident.

I'll never forget it though.

When I was 2 years old I came down with Scarlet Fever and pneumonia on top of it. The doctors didn't think I'd pull through.

Suckers.

That was their chance.

My heart was stopped for 3 hours while they fixed a valve 5 yrs ago. Coming off of a heart/lung machine kinda sucks. A couple false starts, forgetting to breath etc... Did not see any bright lights.

Not me but my little sister. We were at our Uncle's house , he had a pool. We got done eating dinner and wondered where my lil sis was, went outside to the pool , saw her in the deep end! We got her out, paramedics came ,hauled her off , and everthing ended up fine

when i was 18 i was driving the 75' monte carlo with a buddy. we were on the belleville turnpike and i had a quart of beer between my legs and no seatbelts. i decided to speed and as i hit this overpass i was doing 80. the only problem was on the other side of the overpass "that i couldn't see" the traffic had been stopped. talk about not good!

it's a two lane road and i slam on the brakes, my buddy Mike yells "turn the wheel". He saw i wasn't turning the wheel and reached over and turned the wheel all the way to the left. we skidded inches past the last car stopped almost completely sideways i would say at least 60mph. LUCKILY for us there was nobody coming towards us in the other lane or it would have been a head-on collission cause there was nowhere else to go

i counted my blessings, threw my beer away and we went home.

the fact is my buddy turned the wheel to the left and if we didn't make it just passed that last car the passengers side would have taken the worst of it. it gives me chills just thinking about it but i hope this scares somebody to not drink and drive and speed...

when i was 16 i overdosed on alcohol during school. i went into acoma for 3 days and cant remember the next 3 days after that. my blood test said my BAC was .3 something. the doctor said he had no clue how i lived cause i injested 8oz of Bacardi 151 8 oz of jack 8oz of vodka and 8 oz of moonshine in about 5hrs. then a year later i flipped my jeep accross 3 lanes of traffic a 10ft grassy median and 2 lanes of on coming traffic.. both events gave me a new outlook on life
