I was born and raised in Miami, and when I lived briefly in Atlanta I heard the stereotype that Jews are cheap and worship money, and that they are cowards. How did this shit start? My best friends are Jewish and the stereotypes seem silly?

<p>I actually never heard the one about jewish people being cowardly.&nbsp; I always thought that was the french (a sort of unfair stereotype on the french I think).&nbsp; Anyway, I know even in like medieval times, money lending and banking was a job that was primarily held by jews.&nbsp; I think it was considered wrong or unclean for christians to do things such as money lending.&nbsp; Even in shakespeares merchant of venice, shylock was a jew who demanded a pound of flesh on a defaulted loan.&nbsp; There is always anamosity towards people trying to collect money, and the seeds of the stereotype were planted.&nbsp;</p>

My girlfriends family seems to fit a lot of stereotypes.&nbsp; I think its funny.&nbsp; She didn't pick many of them up, but she will drop some hebrew sounding word occansionally.&nbsp; Of the stereotypes her family does fit, cheap isn't one of them, I've been taken out to nice dinners everytime I've visited.&nbsp; I would say its mostly the way they talk, and the things they eat.&nbsp; Bagels are taken very seriously in her house.<br />

I wish people could be as cool as you were and see the difference between racism and ignorance.&nbsp; I say your story accounts for the majority of racist claims and people are too bigoted themselves to deal with the problem reasonably.&nbsp; <br />
