red auerbach story. i pumped gas in dc in the mid 70's. red lived up the street on mass. ave. and used to get his gas at my station, (along with sirica, howard baker, later on al "blow em up" haig), anyway, back then you didn't pump your own gas, you had some punk kid do it for you. red drove a big brown mercedes with vanity tag "red". red would get out of his car, at the pumps, with a lit cigar in his mouth. not giving 2 shits about the celtics or the nba, as cannbis and the group "yes" ruled my day, i told this jabroni in a rather stern way to take his lit cigar and himself away from the fucking pumps or we would all be blowed up real good. to his credit, not a word, just compliance. it wasn't until later that i found out who he was, and how much of a arrogant prick he could be. not to me though. not then, not ever. rest easy, cigar man.....

also had NCAA Tourneys with only 32 teams, which meant pretty much on
the conference champs went to the Tournament, so you had years like
1974 where a team like Maryland was the NUMBER 4 TEAM IN THE COUNTRY,
lost 2 or 3 games TOTAL, and didn't make the tournament after losing
the ACC Tournament title in overtime to NC State

Plus west coast basketball at the time was garbage...UCLA didn't play anyone till the Tourney
