They were HUGE on college radio and were strong enough to make the transition into "popular" music. REM was one of the bands that helped to create a solid framework for Alternative Rock - not only musically but providing an example of how to take an "underground" sound into the mainstream.

They also brought the jangly guitar to the forefront of the underground alternative scene in the early 80s and helped shape the sound of that genre post punk.

A band like the stones, U2 who have stood the test of time shows that they are great. Sure there are going to be some crap records but overall they prove themselves. But I'm on the page and see your point.

Odds are they would put out some stuff that sucked, but what band hasn't. If you look at the Rolling Stones, they are a great band. They had major impact, but their longevity has lead them to relase some music that hasn't been terribly popular (i.e. - music that sucked). However, that hasn't diminished the importance of thier influence.

You can only base judgement on the impact a band had and how they influenced music, not what they might have done given more time.

True... that's what I mean. A band like the stones, U2 who have stood the test of time shows that they are great. Sure there are going to be some crap records but overall they prove themselves. I agree with your point but bands like Nirvana (who I like) if they were still around would they have as much juice as they do? Especialy if KC went solo or something? But I'm on the page and see your point.

I see your point as well. The problem is you can get "stuck" if you try to throw in too many variables. It is enolugh to drive me nuts...
