I disagree with Ron on R.E.M.'s influence.  I think they can be considered the grandfathers of the alternative scene that broke wide with Nirvana in the early 90s.

Same here.  They were HUGE on college radio and were strong enough to make the transition into "popular" music.  REM was one of the bands that helped to create a solid framework for Alternative Rock - not only musically but providing an example of how to take an "underground" sound into the mainstream.
