I have heard people call the show, and mention this comment here on the board:

"Why don't they let the private companies / private sector fund stem cell research, why do they have to make the gov't pay for it?!"

The problem with relying on Pharmacutical companies to develope cures is, and sadly so, based on profit and not the bettering of the worlds people. If they just develope treatments for sicknesses then you have a neverending recurring revenue generated, as opposed to creating a cure and wiping the disease out. I think you would eliminate 50%+ of the medical industry and there is alot of money there. If they cured AIDS tomorrow they would lose billions. (am i saying there is a conspiracy to not have an AiDS cure? no.) But with stem cell research we have some very serious potential.

I have seen lab studies where they used the tissue from a fetal pigs stem cells to see if they could change anything, and they had amazing results. Results being one person who was too debilitated to walk actually was able to begin walking again. But using human stem cells has amazing reults. The British are close to being able to repair certain types of blindness. This also has larger potential (although a little scary..) to be used with nano technology to have little tiny micro repair units in us to repair cells and heart disease, and this isn't some pipe dream this is something that will be seen in my lifetime (Im 31).

Isn't having your tax dollars go to that instead of Halliburton just a little more worth it to all of us? Isn't there something more "GOOD" about this research than building a 250 million dollar bridge to nowhere in Alaska? Of all the bullshit pork both of our parties pass on a daily basis isn't this something we can ALL look at as having the potential to change humanity?

Medicare is the old people one. Unless you want to get rid of the poor people too. Who doesn't?

Really well put Empulse. Just to add a few things:

Pivate firms
typically do not publish their work. In fact they shred data that
might be beneficial to competitors. as opposed to acedemic (mainly
federally funded) researchers whose entire career is wrapped up in
publishing data for public domain. This flow of knowledge is
essential to pushing techonology foward and is not well served by
pivate firms.

I work in a public reseach university, several
months ago I went to a talk by reseacher here who has succesfully
recreated the pace making center of the heart with stem cells.
This work is being done mainly in pigs (a common research animal useful
fo its similarities to humans). The implications for human health
that this poject alone represents make me want punch an evengelical
christian in the face for hindering its progess. Federal funding
is the backbone of academic research.

you didn't hear this from me, but charitable organizations like the bill and melinda gates foundation might make donations to schools like the stem cell institute at the university of minnesota to fund stem cell research.

I think it got sold wrong in Mizzou. People don't like to be told what to do by celebrities. It was sold as a cloning proposition by the opponents. I think you are wrong in characterizing, religious people as patently against this. "A January poll by The St. Louis Post-Dispatch found that about two-thirds of respondents supported the measure." Some religious people must have realized the attenuated connection to life, and the possible benefits.
