View Full Version : Clear and not so Clear

For me, political issues are generally either clear-cut and simple, or murky and complicated. Things like legalization of pot(all for it), gay marriage(why not?), flag burning(don't ban it), prayer in school(hell no), seem like they have simple answers. I can't see how any reasonable, sane person can be fine with tobacco and alcohol, but favor marijuana prohibition. There are others that don't seem so clear to me. Abortion's one of those, it's very murky and labyrinthine controversy, though if I had to come down on one side, it'd probably be pro-choice. Torture in the face of an imminent massive terrorist attack is also a difficult one for me, though as a routine interrogation technique, it's definitely not justifiable. Which issues do you see as clear-cut, and which ones are a little more difficult for you to consider?

Stem Cell Research - Hasn't done shit, people THINK it will (and I think it's a good place to look) but requires dead fetuses(plural spelt properly?) Politicians use this like "I want to cure every disease known to man, and would have yesterday if EVIL BUSH DIDN'T BAN STEM CELL RESEARCH." Bush didn't ban, just doesn't fun with govt money. I don't know how I feel about this one either.

Iraq War - Every war is so different it's impossible to know how to handle it perfectly. Everyone wants to make the public happy, so it's hard to know who wants to do things right and who wants to sit in DC for another few years. Knowing what will work is impossible from my computer in NJ because we're dealing with a very strange enemy.

Organized Labor (Unions) - They take care of the people who are skilled yet uneducated labor like electricians, masons, operators, etc. They help people who are seasonal make it through the winter. They keep the wages comfortable for the labor. Both my parents are union. Father is a Teamster, mother in the teachers' union.

They also raise the price of doing things through the roof because they are guaranteed to get paid. If you have 6 workers and 1 foreman at a job and they decide to fuck around for a week there's nothing you can do.

Minimum Wage Increase - It brings a higher quality of living to the bottom of the unskilled labor pool. It also raises the price of the products and services you receive from those companies. I personally feel that if the minimum wage was TOO high that it would stop people from being motivated to better themselves, but I don't know where that is, so I don't know how I feel about this one either.

I'm sure there are more, I'm just rattling a few off

AIDS Research. Thought not a debated topic, I feel we spend too much money on research for a preventable disease and don't focus enough on diseases you cannot prevent (ie: alzheimers, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophey, parkinsons). Pretty much anything invovling the central nervous system which needs only one big break through to break through them all.

In order to determine what is clear and unclear, we need to consult the Quran and the Sunnah.

Sorry -- that's what spending a year in Saudi Arabia will do to you.

There are too many smaller companies out there that would have to let people go. The minimum wage should stay. When people start these minimum wage jobs, that is the wage they start at. When you work there for an extended period of time, show your dependance and loyality, and work hard - then you get the raise - then you get a promotion. That's how it works. Of course there are some jobs where you don't get promoted, but you still get the raise. If you are worth it.
