I don't think there's much help we can give you. Go to a doctor or chiropractor.

#1- go to a doctor, NOT a chiropractor

#2- a big article just came out in JAMA (the journal of the american medical association) on treatment for herniated discs (IF that is what you have.) here is a summary of the article:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20061123/ap_on_he_me/back_surgery_sciatica

basically, it says that gental exercise (ie. walking) is the best treatment. it is very painful at first, but as bad as it sounds, you need to walk a herniated disc off. it allows the nucleus pulposus, the part that is herniated, to get reabsorbed. that is, IF you have a herniated disc.

I've had a pain in my rib cage on the left side for about a week. It also gets numb in my back on the same side.

You're very young to have this kinda problem, if you've never had a serious back injury that this could stem from, then it's prolly stress related, go to your Doctor & find a Physical Therapist who does massage. I'd also recommend this book, I have 4 fractured vertebrae & arthritis & am no stranger to chronic back pain, this book helps me deal w/ the PSYCHOLOGY of pain, which is critical to recovery. This book is a tool mind you, not a cure (in spite of what the cover says...).

I threw out my back two weeks ago, and had to spend five days flat on my back, the first two days icing it to get rid of inflammation, and the next two with a heating pad. I've done it once before, so I knew what to do, and that I needed muscle relaxers. Essentially it was a huge spasm that needed time to go away. However, I need to make sure I stretch every day.

Unless you know exactly what's wrong, go see a doctor.

Maybe you just are getting old really fast, like Robin Williams did in Jack.

been there done that got the surgery, if you are really bad you need to get in touch with your family and let them know, so they can help you financially if you need to pay rent. my brother covered my rent for 3 months. you need somebody else to pick up prescriptions and food. Get a pet sitter if you have to walk the dog. In fact you could get a pet sitter to do your errands!
