I often stop at a convenience store at different times of the day and am amazed by the number of people who leave their car running while they run inside. I've seen this at other places like delis or the Post Office.

Is it just me? I don't think I would EVER leave my car running no matter how quick I was going to be or what the neighborhood is like. I always turn it off and lock all the doors. Maybe I have no faith in human nature but it just seems like you're asking for trouble if you leave the car running. Am I being paranoid or vehicularly anal? What does everybody else do?

A coworker of mine's sister got her car stolen this way. Is it really that much trouble to turn off the goddamned car and lock it?

No. I leave my car after it comes to a complete stop.

I do if I'm at the ATM or just popping into the convenience store for some smokes. My car has to remain in my sight.

I always turn it off and lock it. I don't even feel confident enough in the winter to warm it up and go back inside. I can see my truck out the window of my apartment, but I'm too high to jump if I saw someone fucking with it and wouldn't be able to get out fast enough if I took the stairs after I noticed funny business.

I accidentally left my truck unlocked at laguardia for 2 weeks with my xm radio dangling off it's cables, my pioneer head unit, a back seat full of tools, and a bunch of other shit.

I came back and nothing was missing.

It is illegal to leave your car running while you are in the store in jersey. Punishable by fine.

So yeah I don't do it, but my grandpop had his car stolen this way some time ago.

I'm more concerned about locking myself out of the car when leaving it running than someone stealing it.

What kind of car do I drive?

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

No, I usually walk away from my car, unless I'm in a hurry then I might run away from it.

Seriously, I too see lots of people who do that and wonder what the hell they're thinking. I've been tempted to get in and move the car but never have the balls to do it. And on an environmental level, I can't understand how people waste that much gas.

i always lock up my car and i never leave it running (yet it was stolen 2 weeks ago). my sister and her husband leave the keys in their cars all the time at their house in PA. that to me is shocking.

I leave my car running in the winter first because it gets pretty damn cold here and second because I live on a small island and it would be easy to catch someone. I worked in northern British Columbia one winter and had a diesel pickup. I literally didn't turn it off for over two months cuz it took hours of running to get it to warm up. Also car theft isn't as big of a problem there.

I would never do that where I live now, but where I went to college, way out in the middle of no where bum fuck Virginia, people did it all the time.

NYPD crime stats would drop drastically if we could refuse to take reports from "victims" who were just too stupid to not become victims.

People leave their laptops on a starbuck's table and go to the bathroom for 20 minutes, totally shocked when they return to find it no longer there!

Hot chicks leave their drinks unattended and are surprised to find out, the next day, that they were drugged by some strange asshole creep.

And yes, people leave their cars running while they run in to the post office, etc... coming out 10 minutes later saying, "hey, I thought crime was down in this city"

For those members that live in NYC; yes, the NYPD has done a phenominal job in preventing crime these past 10-15 years, but we didnt exterminate it....it still exists especially given an opportunity ...and you live in NEW YORK for god's sake. Use some common sense.

I even lock up my police car when I run in to get a doughnut. (obligatory joke, but true)

Never. I shut the car off, and go in to do whatever I need to do ((post office, convenience store, etc)). My family makes fun of me when I do this when I'm away in the Poconos in the middle of nowhere, but its just habit. Only time I'll leave the car running while I run in to do stuff is if someone is in the car, like my sister or whomever I happen to be riding around with that day.

In my own car? Never.

With the company truck? That bitch gets started at 7AM and doesn't get turned off until I'm done working. In the summer the AC is cranking all day, and the heat is on full blast all winter. Even if I have a slow day and actually stop to eat in a diner (as opposed to eating while I drive, which is usually the case) I leave it running.

I live in Wisconsin. I could wrap my daughter in hundred dollar bills and leave the car running with her in the back seat and all the doors wide open.

I never leave my car running if I'm not in it unless I'm warming it up in the morning (which I can do without putting in the keys thanks to my nifty remote, on a 1987 Honda Accord POS none the less), but I often do the one click deal that lets you listen to the radio while you sit there if I'm waiting around before class or having a bite to eat in between things, though I hear it's really bad to leave your car running ever and I should really treat it like a baby cause the thing will die on me any day now.

i live in florida so in august it is hard to turn it off if your are runnin in quick somewhere

but, i heard a story about a car that got left running infront of a gas station at a busy intersection and a little kid got in and drove it into oncoming traffic

it actually depends.

Yes on hot days to leave the AC on is nice and vice versa on the cold days, but it also depends on the neighborhood.

It costs more gas to shut your car off and turn it back on in 10 mins then to leave it running for 15 mins. So if I plan on running into my parents house for 5 mins to pick something up? Yes I will leave it running, or if i run into my apartment for a minute or two only to jump back in my car. Even at the Dunkin Donuts on the corner. If it get stolen there I (along with 10 other people) will see it stolen and my cell phone is ALWAYS with me, so one quick call to 911 and all officers are on the lookout. Besides, how many OTHER Black Toyota Avalons with WOW and OBEY FEZ stickers could there be in this state?

But if I was in NYC or J.C. or other towns/cities like that? No way. Car is off, keys with me.

I would like to add as a aftethought, that I do lock up my car when I park in my driveway at night.

The only time I can think I've ever left my car running is when I drop a letter in a mailbox.

I had a creepy experience on Cape Cod when my boyfriend left his truck running with me in it. He ran into a convenience store to get a bottle of water. All of a sudden this creepy guy comes out of the bushes and starts walking toward the car. My boyfriend came out of the store when the guy was 5 feet from the truck. He saw my boyfriend and went back into the bushes. Creeped me the hell out.

I turn off and lock my car every time I get out of it. Someone might not steal my car but they may swipe my MyFi, my iPod, some CD's or any of the drum equipment they might see in my trunk if I forget to pull the cover over it all.

I also lock my car everywhere when I park it, even at home.

Years ago, I parked my car on Kings Street in Soho. I took all my important stuff-- wallet, keys. ID, etc and left a knapsack with a pair if dirty underwear (I had spent the night at my BFs), an umbrella, and my journal. Someone popped the lock on my hatchback and stole those "treasures."

The fact my car, my personal space, had been violated really annoyed me. But I couldn't shake the feeling that if I had gone to Cooper Square I would have found some homeless guy selling my journal, under my umbrella, with my underwear on top of his head.

My wife's new car is locked and alarmed at all times. Mine on the other hand is usually not locked. It is never left running, even for 2 minutes, but not locked. Sometimes I even leave my state of the art SkyFi1 inside.
