OK all of you bargain hunters, and coupon clippers, I need some help.

What is the absolute best deal out there on a new machine. Desktop, laptop, I don't care. I am on borrowed time right now. I need a new, cheap machine.

And no mail in rebates.

Thanks.

Check out the Mac Mini. You can use your existing monitor, keyboard, and mouse, and it takes the place of your PC tower.

If you want a dell, I can check the corporate pricing for you on monday. But I like gvac's idea better.

I can't go minimac for my main home machine. I'd be ok, but the wife and kids would be lost.

Wait a minute...

Now you're thinking correctly, Tub.

By the way, there's a myriad of programs available that let you run Windows, Mac OS X and Linux simultaneously on a Mac.

good call gvac!

but hottub doesn't seem to keen on switching platforms, we already got one convert this month.

For PC go dell. good price and reliable.

If you can shell out for it or find a decent deal, spring for Dell's XPS system. That's what I got almost a year ago and the thing is spectacular. That piddling Mac paperweight would be like the squealing pig guard the Rancor ate in Return of The Jedi compared to it.

And yeah, it's a thread about computers, so such nerdly references are allowed.

Honestly, the XPS is best if you play a lot of games or do a ton of film/photo stuff...other than that it's probably not what you need. It does do everything great, and probably would last you longer than most anything else you buy. You'd be set with it for at least the next 5 years.

I'd stay away from Acer... I bought a notebook in March and it's been it for warranty work twice already.

If I were to buy again, I'd go with an Asus.

I got a Lenovo 1.83 Core Duo, with a Geforce Go 7300, 512 Ram, 100 GB harddrive, and DVD rewritable drive for 1000. I don't see a comparable deal on Newegg. It never hurts to wait a bit for a deal. I like my lenovo, but the only thing I really cared about was best specs for the price. I think its been mentioned but keep an eye out on HP's website, they run deals a lot and their prices can be really good. Good luck!

Well, I ordered my new machine. Flame me if you want, but I am happy. Should arive Monday or Tuesday. I think I did pretty well for being cheap. Now my biggest problem is migrating the stuff from this box to the new one. I guess I will first try to finish setting up my wireless network and do it that way. It sucks that I didn't get a new monitor, and will have to work two boxes with one display. Unless I can dig an old one up from the office.

I have owned 2 emachines, a desktop back in 1999 and a laptop 2 years ago. I loved them, very affordable and work as good if not better then others. I wish they still made laptops, but they sold that division to gateway and now I have a gateway.

My only question is why wouldnt you have purchased a laptop over a desktop?

Good luck with your new pc, you will love it trust me emachines are great and have the best customer support ever.

If anything, HT, you can probably find a friend who's got atleast one laying around that they can loan you or let you keep. If you're still using a CRT, shell out the $150 for an LCD and your power bill will thank you.

I was a little skeptical because their early pc's were pieces of crap with low end components but the more recent ones are just as good as HP, Dell, etc... Save the money, who cares what logo it has on the side of the case.

Sorry I saw this thread so late Hottub, because Tigerdirect and Newegg would be the 1st places I sent you.

I was just talking to a co-worker friend of mine last week about what he thought about getting a barebones system and upgrading it. We found a nice deal that basically gave you a nice processor, 512 RAM, motherboard, power source and case for like 160 bucks. Then he'd get a good video card, upgrade some RAM and swap out some of the less crutial stuff from his old comp.

It's not as easy to do but keeping your eyes open and doing a little work yourself goes a long way.

OH, and congrats on finding that machine. Looks like a real good deal to me. Great video card, glad to see a DVD-R, media reader isn't that nessecary but whatever.

Good luck with it. Upgrade to at least 1 gig of RAM as soon as you can, and add an extra fan if theres a space. either that or if there's only room for 1 fan, get a larger fan. Measure it and get a super cheap one off Newegg.com.

Only problem I see with that comp is only 2 RAM slots. I fucking HATE a Motherboard with too few RAM slots. I usually roll with a bunch of smaller RAM upgrades over time, so 3 to 4 slots is nice to add RAM as I can afford it.

I guess it's no big deal though. Seems there's 1 stick of 512 in there, just double it and you'll be fuckin' set up nice. I mean you can always add a Gig stick, if the motherboard will allow, or place 2 1 Gig sticks in there, but whatever. You're probably not gonna game with the thing anyway, but you probably can with more RAM.

ONE OF US HOTTUB!!! I'll see you in Stormwind my friend! GEEK IT UP!!!!

As for data transfer, just burn some CD-Rs or DVD-Rs. Or go buy yourself a thumb drive and transfer quickly like that.

If you have huge files, you're stuck doing it that way, but it won't be as bad as you're thinking. Once you set up your own small office network, you can just plug the monitor into the old one, then click and drag into your new comp's shared folder.
