Hey Jerry Lehane - they may have found water on Mars!

He's probably in a catatonic state over this. Expect the unviewable photoshopped pictures momentarily.

http://www.nasa.gov/home/hqnews/2006/dec/HQ_M06186_Mars_Briefing.html

Story

Wake me when they discover the green martian hookers.

Yesterday some new images were released and one of them was showing what looked like ice in a crater. It might have something to do with that.

A strangely persistent patch of frozen water is among the features imaged by NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) in the first few days since it started its main phase of science observations.

Although..... big announcement from NASA and Ron & Fez on the same day?!?! Hmmmm.

I was just watching the announcement and it seems they are claiming that there is water flowing on Mars TODAY.

20 years ago they felt that there probably was water on Mars a billion years ago.

10 years ago they thought a million years ago.

Now there is evidence for water there NOW. Sounds promising but as the chief scientist from JPL cautioned at a talk I attended several years ago, there are liquids other than water that can cause the same effects. Either way, sounds cool and another notch in NASA's belt. These guys deserve some serious props.

Huge for two reasons if it's true and it's water:

1. If there is liquid water present still, it really ups the ante for possible life there, present or past. Little atmosphere means the UV flux is pretty horrific, which should fry most life like ours, but our earth teems life-forms that survive and thrive at insane temps and pressures, anyway, Possible Life on Mars is a real good selling point for a NASA Manned Mars mission and liquid water is Huge coz

2. Liquid water solves a huge problem w/ actually going to Mars. Taking H2O sucks, water is heavy and takes up space and we need lots. But if we had water on Mars we solves two biggies, Power and that pesky breathing stuff.

Water = Power and Oxygen. It's how Apollo powered their LEM and CSM. When you put an electric current through water it breaks H2O into H and O, Hydrogen and Oxygen gas. We do this in 9th grade lab. You put electricity in the water and you have oxygen to breathe and both gases can be used as power sources.

and we need to see if, like Klandathu, it's a Bug Planet.

I am a little dissapointed, to be honest. I had heard a "major" announcement was coming and waited with inticipation, and what do we get? A hill with a streak down the side? Come on. Show me puddles, show me a lake or a glistining shimmer off the sand, something!

This isn't about Mars, but I didn't want to start a new thread...
If you don't live near many lights, you can see the Internations Space Station right now. It reaches it's highest point at 10:08PM. I'm pretty sure I just saw it in the South sky... not real high.

If anyone is interested in what Jerry is up to: Linky Thingy (http://www.jerrylehane.com/)
The Giganta artwork is brilliant.
The 2 Foot Tall Man (http://www.mojunkprod.com/video/2FtTallMan.cfm)needs to be seen to be believed.
