<p><a href="http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/16114030/">I'm sorry to even post it.</a></p><p>An FDA panel just dealt a blow to the use of drug eluting stents (DES), heart devices implanted in at least 3 million Americans for life. It said there "safety concerns" for "off label uses." </p><p class="textBodyBlack"><span></span>More than 60 per cent of patients with the DES have gotten them in such "off label" indications — including putting them in more than one vessel or patients with complications such as diabetes.</p><p class="textBodyBlack">The problem is that DES carry a greater risk of causing blood clots that can lead to heart attacks and death.</p><p class="textBodyBlack"><span></span>Yesterday the panel concluded the stents were safe and effective for the "labeled" use of uncomplicated one vessel disease.</p><p class="textBodyBlack">It said if possible all DES patients should get the anti-clotting drug Plavix for 12 months.</p><p class="textBodyBlack"><span></span>Several of the panelists pointed to a Swedish study of 60,000 patients showing that patients with DES have a 20 per cent higher death rate than those getting the older bare metal stents.</p><p class="textBodyBlack"> </p><p class="textBodyBlack"> </p><p> </p>

I saw that report on CNN. The rate of problems, that the doc they interviewed, has seen are about 5 in 1000 patients. He says he gives his patients blood thinners (which Fez is on), and they are fine. The benefits outweigh the risks.
