Does anyone know the full history of Israel, say going back to 1948? I know it was created by a UN Mandate in 1948. I think Palestine was a British territory, Just need the whole concept about the whole conflict. IE Anti Israel people say it was stolen land from the Palistenians and Pro Israelis say that Israel belongs to the Jews

from what i know and i could be wrong is that the land there was barren and un buildable, the people that were living there were in tents. they Jews (and i do not mean that in a bad way) were given that land to feel safe and to have a true homeland. That land in particular is the birth place of religion and that religon is Jewidism. that was the land that moses was leading them too and the temple that was built there still remains in the wailling wall.

i could be wrong on some of this stuff, regina is jewish and not that religous but she did go to yeshiva for 8 years. Bobo might know more on it or even WInnie Cooper.

Take a long look at the Six Day War - it's really the turning point. Israel was attacked by four countries during the summer of love and six days later had more land than they started with.

as explained to me yesterday by my military history professor: israel was a british colony province whatever. post wwII britian encouraged by the un gave the land to the large number of slavic jews who had been emigrating there post holocaust. this pissed of palestinian mulsims and jews, because no matter what, people were living there. the israelis cleared the land in many assholish ways so that the arab world no longer diferentiated between european jews and palestinian jews, so palestinian jews are pissed at european jews for fucking up the delicate balance that had been lasting. so yeah, the arab world was kool and the gang with america because we ahd always up until that point relied on reason more than passion, then we backed israel, and that pissed off the arab world because we just ignored the fact that palestine was filled with people who had called that land their home for millenia, regardless of religious affiliation.

I expect this thread to be more of a lesson on how divisive Israel is for Americans than on the history of Israel. If you really want to know you'll just follow FezPaul's link.

I guess I find it astonishing that all sides are so convinced of their righteousness, yet I've never been able to come to terms with exactly where I stand.

I reread all the Wikipedia stuff about Arab-Israeli relations last July after getting in an argument with my wife about Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon. I felt it was an appalling overreaction, she saw it as Israel defending itself. She had spent considerable time in Israel while my position was based more on being a life-long peacenik.

Reading all the history again took me back to being an adorable 15-year old representing the country of Mali in the Mock United Nations, the Arab-Israel conflict was the big issue then as well. Sadly, I'm just as confused and conflicted about the situation as I was back in 1986. I still feel that Israel is a necessity and must exist, yet I object to the brutality of many of their tactics.
