Magill Elementary School, has worked for more than a year to ban the popular books from Gwinnett schools, claiming the popular fiction series is an attempt to indoctrinate children in religious witchcraft.

"It's mainstreaming witchcraft in a subtle and deceptive manner, in a children-friendly format," said Mallory, who was not at the meeting.

Gwinnett school officials have argued that the books are good tools to encourage children to read and to spark creativity and imagination. Banning all books with references to witchcraft would mean classics like "Macbeth" and "Cinderella" would have to go, they said.

Mallory, a mother of four from Loganville, questions the educational value of the fiction series.

"That's the kind of stuff in these books - murder and greed and violence. Why do they have to read them in school? If parents wanted to get these books, they could get them in bookstores," she said.

She said she has fought to ban the books from the classrooms - where she said teachers are assigning the books as homework - rather than restricting them from school libraries. "It's a clear promotion of the books," she said. "And the books promote witchcraft."

The Harry Potter series, penned by J.K. Rowling, is no stranger to controversy. The books have been challenged 115 times since 2000, making it the most challenged books of the 21st Century, according to the American Library Association.

The challenges most often claim that the series encourages children to question adult authority and promotes witchcraft, said Deborah Caldwell-Stone, the deputy director for the association's Office for Intellectual Freedom.

"If you start removing books because they offer witchcraft as a viable alternative to Christianity, you'd lose a lot of classic literature," she said. "Which is why when we talk about challenging of books, we encourage a holistic reading of the book, to look at the book as a whole - not just excerpts."

Court battles over the books have been messy.

In one of the most high-profile legal battles, an Arkansas federal judge ruled in 2003 that a rural school district could not force children to present the librarian with written parental permission to check out the books. The Cedarville School District's board kept the books under lock and key after it decided the series fostered rebellion and encouraged witchcraft.

In the Georgia decision, the state board ruled that Mallory had failed to prove that the books promot

I agree with you, Jeff...for once...about how children should be encouraged to read....but you really should cut down on the violence that you use to express your opinion.....calm down...please....for your own sake!!!!!

But you're right otherwise.....have a great day, Buddy!!!!!

No, this kind of thing needs to be attacked like this dummy. I hope she escalates the issue to the next level. You know why you're not LADY? Because the next level requires you to retain a lawyer, and that's gonna cost you out of your own pocket. SURE, it's easy to appeal to the school board. That's free. Let's put your money where your big mouth is. Show us how much you love your child by investing your own hard earned cash into the prosecution of literature. See how far that gets you in this country where the fundamental underpinnings of our civilization revolve around the notion of free speech, popular or unpopular.

For this story not to raise the ire of any sensible individual who reads it, I gotta ask, do attacks on the 1st ammendment not bother you? I mean truly, this is an attack on the american way more potentially damaging than an Al Queda attack if it was to be upheld and pervade the country.

as a HUGE harry potter fan i have to disagree with this woman. its called "fantasy". Its not "real". not only does it promote reading in the classroom, but the story behind it is about courage, friendship, honor and above all responsibility. so I guess they should ban Poetry while they are at it.

she needs to be punched in the cunt.

I just re-read the article. This is the best part:

Mallory said she wasn't able to bring forward any evidence at the hearing.

"How can you prove a case without being able to call witnesses or give evidence?" she asked Thursday in a telephone interview."

Then why even bother, you rancid cunt of a woman? Just keep your horrible little children in a religious fog in your own home and let well adjusted kids read what they want.

People like this empower the very books they hate. If you just made sure your kids didn't read what you didn't like you'd be fine. But they make a book out to be evil, create a stink about it and just bring attention to the whole thing instead of letting the thing die. They are the ones acting like a book has power over them, it's not the book. It's just fiction. But then again, these are the kinds of idiots that take another book of fiction as fact too.

Math can be a dangerous business. Hypatia of Alexandria, the first women mathematician was attacked by an angry mob. They ripped her flesh from her body with pieces of pottery until she died. Then they cut her up and burned her. Those wacky christians...

I'm not even sure this story is even worth the nickle i have to pay for the felafel to power my fingers to type this response. If there's one article of faith in this country - or that country, whatever - that's more powerful than Christianity it's capitalism. This series is a monster money-maker and the crazy Christians (as opposed to the vast majority) are not going to be able to make it go away.

If I'm going to do any cunt-kicking it's going to be over evolution. Dispite a common misconception, science is not an all-powerful political force that can defend itself from faith in places like Kansas. Just like it can't convince most of the world of an imaginary phenomenon like global warming. Scientists are not so busy lining their pockets with fake global warming grants while losing ground on evolution in schools.

America is becoming more and more anti-intellectual and thus anti-reason, but the real fight is over real issues where the vested interest of political power is not behind the truth - religious power is against evolution and economic power is against global warming. Capitalism is against crazy Christian extremist bitch, so I'm not sweating it.

This is like when they banned EARTH DAY at my high school becuase they decided it was a PAGAN holiday. They literally bussed people in from out of town to protest because we ate around a teepee outside or some crap.

She's probably a "savage mexican"

Is anyone ever going to let that die? I hate to break it to you, but the person that beat the shit out of my brother was a fucking savage to do it, and yes, he was also mexican.

never read any of the harry potters but the movies were pretty good. I dont understand why anyone would want to ban any books.
I hate religion but I'm not going to bitch about it and stop people from having access to it. Let people make their own choices.
