I have a Phillips and a Magnavox tube-style TVs in my place, and the picture and color is always good. When I upgrade, I won't go by marketing, brand name, or anything else. Consumer Reports, research on the net, and take a look in the store.

Here's a link to a chart on determining size: http://www.cnet.com/4520-7874_1-5108580-2.html

As far as brands go, the panels are only made by a few companies (Samsung is an OEM). Everyone incorporates these panels into their own designs.

I'm kind of low on Sony lately. The only TV's myself, family members or friends have ever had to get repaired were Sony. My father has had his Sony rear-projection fixed three times, twice in the last year.

Picked up a 42" Vizio LCD for my sister and her husband a few months ago. The default settings were crap, but after tweaking the set looks great. Sam's Club has it now for $1199. My friend has had a Vizio for a couple of years without a problem, so I felt comfortable going with it.

Also, some tv's are EDTV as opposed to HDTV. If you're spending the money, make sure you get HD.
