Strange story that doesn't seem like someone trying to cheat, but rather a genetic anomoly which probably has now devastated this women's life. Wow, could you imagine such a horrible call?

I was completely dismayed at this story today. Yahoo sports ran the story that she won like a week ago. I kinda like indian girls, and i searched for her photos. Its just another step towards gayville.

Is this a problem in India? I saw a documentary last summer about hermaphrodites (spellcheck please?) in India and it made it out to look like an epidemic in their country.

ScottinNJ you spelled "hermaphrodite" correctly. And it does appear that the genetic anomoly that results in hermaphroditism is prevalent in certain communities in India. They tend to be isolated both by tribal custom and geography, so mosaic chromosomal hermaphroditism is a trait that appears with greater frequency than the average of the rest of the population.

I sometimes wonder about the genetic and hormonal make-up of some female athletes. I do not know the exact statistic, but there is a percentage of embryos that get a "bath" in a hormone called androstenadione, a male growth hormone, within the first 8 weeks of embryonic development (when an embryo has NO sex chromosomes), yet develop to become full XX female babies. However, the "andro-bath" causes some physical characteristics in the female that tend her towards athletics, mathematics, sciences, jobs that involve physical labor, a tendency for greater levels of aggression and a heightened sex drive. I think it has something to do with propensity to create slightly higher levels of testoerone at puberty. I read this study years ago in college but am too lazy to google it right now.

Perhaps this woman from India has greater levels of testosterone (males and females both produce this hormone) which might account for the discrepant "gender" test results.

And there are rules against it as gene manipulation is becoming a big problem as the science advances. Scary that people would take chances like these, although the powers that be here don't suspect fowl play with this case, but it does break the rule put in place.
