I think Oliver Perez will surprise some people this season, Peterson can do wonders.

I do think Omar will do something though, its not like him to stand pat.

I don't think Zito is worth 18 mil a year, he's not a true #1, he's more of a true #2, lefty and durable, but not worth 18 mil. Now he might have been worth 18 mil a year to the Mets, since they have such deep pockets and could really use a top of the rotation starter.

Zito will put up some good to great numbers in SF, that's a great pitchers park. Its a pretty good move for the Giants, with Cain, Lowry and Lincecum on the way, they'll have a nice rotation to attract some hitters, who they are gonna need to sign through FA because their minor league system stinks.

Rather shocking move, I would have bet he'd have ended up with the Mets.

I'm sorry but 18 million a year is way too much for a guy that works every 5 days. I think baseball better do something b/c these guys are making way too much money for a game.

That being said, he might be even better the national league. I guess the giants are trying to win and maybe win this year.

But you have to admit that the Marlins staff is way above "decent" if their staff is decent, what is the Met's staff? And I mentioned two players, M-Cab and H-Ram, to go along with them you have Dan Uggla, Josh Willingham and Jeremy Hermida who I expect to bounce back after a terrible rookie year. If they can swing a deal for a CFer they will be in my eyes the team to beat in the NL East. With their staff they aren't going to have to lead the league in runs, but they will score alot, with H-Ram and Uggla at the top of the lineup with M-Cab, Willingham and Hermida knocking them in.

I for one think the Mets will be ok, they have Pelfrey who seems to be ready, and Philip Humber will be ready to contribute after a half season in the minors. I don't think they should trade Milledge and possibly Pelfrey or Humber for a starter. Maybe sign a Jeff Weaver or someone like that and see what sticks.

You just aren't going to win anything in baseball with a $20 million payroll and under. Last year the Marlins payroll was $14,998,500.

Yes i know the Marlins have good young players, but they will also have decent good young players who will always leave when they hit their full potential to get paid what they are worth. You can't compete with just some good young stars. You need a good bench, veteran leadership, a good bullpen, etc. You also need some support from management when the trade deadline hits. This will never exist with that low of a payroll and an owner who doesn't even want the team there.

If they prove me wrong then fine, but it has NEVER happened in modern times baseball.

I'm fighting this Mets/Phillies fight on two boards at the moment, so I'll repeat something I just repeated elsewhere.

From July 29 (date of the Abreu trade) on last season, the Phils had a better record.

Say what you want, but there wasn't that big a gap talent wise going into this offseason. The Phils have added key pieces, the Mets have done absolutely shit.

For the record, here's the numbers after the Abreu trade:

Phillies: 39-23

Mets: 36-24

And they had a decent second half and still finished 12 behind the mets.

Instead of just picking random dates to prove your point, how about we just pick the whole season. They also made many other significant moves in terms of trades during that stretch.

The point is that you can't look at the standings and see the Mets finishing 12 games higher than the Phils and say that's an accurate portrayal of what will happen this season, because the team before July 29 during the first three months of the season was vastly different than the team during the last three months and up to today.

Any Mets fan who isn't concerned about the Phillies just isn't paying attention.

Now, if you want to argue there's some kind of Karma related curse that will prevent any Philadelphia team from ever winning, I can't really argue that point.
I thank the Giants for giving Zito that much money. It allows the contract the Brewers gave Suppan (4yr $42M) to look good to the locals and shut them up.

Nothing like somebody else doing your PR work for you.

The Mets had no pitchers (on the field) last year and went to the 7th game of the NLCS. The Mets are built around hitting and bullpen. They still have both. You'd LOVE to have some more solid starters, but at this price you need your head examined. See what the kids can do, maybe make a trade for someone reliable. Want Randy Johnson?

Crud.

Not because I gave a damn where Zito was gonna end up...his numbers indicate he's gonna keep sliding (yeah, he's good, but he's not gonna be a #1 on any legit team much longer, if he is now, and he's being paid like one for nearly a decade)...I'm crudding because I'm worried this will inflate Carlos Zambrano's asking price when the Cubs re-sign him this coming year. Thank God he fired Boras.

The bad thing for the Cubs is they've spent like $300M this off-season and they won't have many bullets left to chase him on an open market.

Actually, there's no reason the Cubs can't pay whatever Zambrano wants, and I have little doubt they will. And I wouldn't be surprised if Zambrano is had for less than Zito...a little Cy Young goes a long way. Not drastically less, of course, but I'd lay money his payday isn't as huge.

Zambrano is a workhorse #1 pitcher who will be 27 at the start of the 2008 season. Zito is a borderline 1/2 who is 29, albeit with a nice CY Young trophy & nice left-handed curve.

I would probably take that bet everyday of the week.

Here's three really good articles from the Hardball Times breaking down some basics on pitching mechanics and what has gone wrong with Barry Zito.
Part 1 A bridge too far (http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/article/a-bridge-too-far/)
Part 2 In the beginning God created heaven and earth… (http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/article/in-the-beginning-god-created-heaven-and-earth/)
Part 3 Exactly what are effective throwing mechanics? (http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/article/exactly-what-are-effective-throwing-mechanics/)
Here's one really good tidbit
One interesting aspect of throwing is that once the momentum has been drained out of the torso, the action of the arm is far more passive and active. The arm behaves more like a whip (buggy whip “popper”) that has been driven by the body.
The negative aspect of arm strength is when the arm itself becomes the primary mechanism to throw the baseball. This can also be described as “disconnection.” Disconnection means the arm has lost its ability to receive/transform momentum from the body. A consequence of this disconnection forces the arm-shoulder complex to become more active than it should in terms of throwing a baseball. The player is trying to make up for the lack of efficient transfer of momentum by “muscling” the ball to the plate.
Part 3 gets really scientific and complicated, but there's a ton of good stuff in there. Worth the brain cramp.
Also, with Zito going to the bullpen I thought it would be interesting to see what we all thought of the deal at the time.

Did I personally offend you at some point?
As the only giants fan I see this as a personal attack.
Sigh
Cool articles tho
