So I'm sitting in the hotel lobby in Amman, Jordan here and there are a couple of A-rabs in the lobby watching Al-YJazeera and I can make out that the news is something about Saddam and death -"moot" in A-rabic. There's a real conservative guy with a big old beard and western clothes watching intently with the crazy in his eyes and his wife in the full March of the Penguin suit sitting quietly next to him as he occasionally shouts at the tv. On the other side of the room is an older skinny guy with the full A-rab dress and the Yassir Arafat kifiyya on his head. He gave me sweets the night before because it's a three day holiday and you give sweets to guests in the Middle East on holidays. Both of these guys are Iraqis, I'm pretty sure. There's at least 300,000 Iraqis in Jordan because we turned Iraq into a squathole. I asked them "Is Saddam dead?" The fundy guy whips his head around and gives me the crazy eye. How dare I inquire about a dead Arab! The other guy asks me "Are you Dutch?" He's trying to deflate the situation - not wanting me confronting the crazy. He knows I'm American. I said I was American and asked again if he's dead? He said yes. I said "they killed him on the holiday?" I had understood some of the "man on the street" interviews on the TV and most A-rabs had said they only had a problem with the execution being during the holy day. He said yes. I said that's bad. The funamentalist guy looked confused. He didn't expect this military-looking American to understand this aspect. I said "but he's dead?" "Yes." I said "Same rope as Bush?" The nice guy laughed. The fundy looked at him and was angry for him talking to me. They began arguing about me as I drank my coffee pretending not to understand their dialect. The nice guy was basically reminded by my honesty - that both Saddam and Bush are scum - that I was to be respected and had decided to stand up to the fundy - possibly an Iraqi insurgent, but no way to know really. What I had done is bring the ballance in the room to the ethics of the Middle East before the Iraq war. The people that hate westerners were few and were widely viewed to be disgracing Islam. Islam - dispite what you'll read from the Quran as quoted by Christian and Jewish fundy sources - places a high value on respecting non-Muslims, especially Christians and (now, not so much) Jews. The war has given the fundies the upper hand. But I was still able to give it back to the old-schooler. Before I left them to go download internet porn down the street.

Watching A-rabic TV later on I literally had to pay close attention because I thought they were having some sort of sponsored call-in contest to win a million dollars if you could guess how many times Saddam bounced at the end of his rope. It was a huge media story and not just the news. The tone was pretty objective, from what I gathered. They showed half hour documentaries on his life. They included the famous pictures of the Kurds he gassed in Halabja, which means they were not pro-Saddam. But mainly it was American-style media sensationalism on all the channels. It was all fancy graphics and dramatic music to try to convince you that each station had THE Saddam stories today. Like usual, the A-rabs reminded me of Americans.

The rest of the day, any time someone mentioned Saddam to me I just said "All ham to Allah" wich means "thanks to God" and they accepted it at face value, sometimes repeating the phrase to me. I left Bush out of it and just let them guess my feelings on the war. I got no hostility. Outside of the hotel lobby. I'm not sure why I've gotten a few emails warning me to be careful after the execution. I appreciate the concearn, but really, it's been commonly reported for years that Saddam has never been popular in the Middle East. His execution will change nothing, in Iraq or anywhere. Most A-rabs will just say "fuck hi

And by the way Robert Fisk would be a good journalist if he weren't a liberal douchebag. But he tells half the story - the half that liberals want to hear - and then editorializes as though it was the whole story. So he sucks. Fuck him. Find out what Fareed Zakaria has to say about the execution and you might actually learn something useful. For you conservatives, look for George Will's collumn on it. Most of the rest is going to be retarded spin.

I'm all good. I got in about 12 hours ago and had forgotten all about the bombings until I remembered this thread. I didn't even notice any big security presence in the airport, but then I've been in the ME for two years. The backpacker's ghetto is apparently more packed than it's been in recent years - according to people who've been here before. Eh. I saw my first hot ladyboy, so it aint bombs I'm worried about getting smuggled.
