I saw <em>Rocky Balboa</em> and enjoyed it, but I wouldn't go so far as to call it a good film...I think more that it didn't totally suck a la the fifth film, so it was a pleasant surprise in only being sort of average. It's better than the fifth, but not the fourth and definitely not the first film, probably better than the second...basically, this is on quality level with the third film. Not bad, not good; just sort of there.

<p>They waited for a good script, which is a good sign, and I think Harrison Ford, or rather, the magic of editing and stunts can keep Indiana Jones hitting hard. Just look at Sean Connery in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. </p><p>As for speculation of what the movie is about - no foreign locations have been announced and only that some of it will be filmed in Los Angeles.</p><p>The Last Crusade (according to IMDB) takes place in 1938. It has been 17 years (!) since that movie so I'd guess it would have to be <em>at least</em> 10 years after those events took place, so it would be around 1948. </p><p>Will he go back to fighting the Nazi's? Perhaps recovering some treasure they stole during WWII. I think the Nazi's make an excellent foe to Indiana Jones. </p>

<p>I was kind've hoping back in the last crusade movie that it was the beginning of them passing the torch to River Phoenix to do prequels of Indy growing up. I know they made a series, though it wasn't what I was hoping for. I thought a backstory type of movie series would be cool because they could continue the story and move away from Harrison Ford who didn't want to do the movies anymore at the time.</p><p>I think at his age he's perfectly capable for making the movies and can do it less intensive and more creatively interesting if they wrote it right. I'm just hoping it doesn't turn into a whole CGI effects movie. </p>

<p>I was watching an old western the other day, "Journey To Shiloh", and after me & Sweety figured out that the main actor was James Caan, we then picked out Jan Michael Vincent, Ernest Borgnine, and then in the background is a tall, lanky fellow. I said "Sweety that's Harrison Ford!" We couldn't believe it! I had to look it up to be sure. It was made in 1968, after Ford being in films for only 2 years. Good western too.</p><p>I love the Indiana Jones movies. I doubt Ford could fuck his character up if he tried. He's a great actor.</p>

I was reading a thing the other day that said Ford was gonna quit. Apparently, and I think it was due to insurance reasons, they weren't going to us a real whip; they were just gonna CG one in. Ford was like, "Uhmmmmmm, no." He said if he would refuse to do it if they didn't let him use a real whip. Good for him, I say. CGI has it's place and uses, but is it really to the point where they need to CG a whip into a movie? C'mon, that's just crazy talk. Why not just CG all the sets and costumes and actors while we're at it? Oh wait, Lucas already did that and it was a fucking circus (See Also: Star Wars Episodes I-III).

This is a bad sign. They're bringing in some young blood for sex appeal (and to take over some of the action scenes).
This franchise has enough of a following. If they already have a decent script, the only new casting they need is a realistic love interest.

come the phuck on. retired from acting? How many actors are saying they're retiring from acting then somehow 2 years later there are tons of movie with them. I think Sandra Bullock did the same thing and this year she had that movie with Dr. Troy from Nip/Tuck. It always happens. Besides, it's not like the world is losing something with Sean Connery not acting. He probably said it because Paul Newman just got press from retiring from acting (a far greater loss overall, I know neither of them have really done work in the past few years).
As for Indiana Jones...I really think it's an overall dumb idea. Just move on. Just walk away and move on.

For the first time since 1989, Harrison Ford dons the familiar costume on Thursday, June 21, 2007, as the upcoming Indiana Jones adventure begins production under the direction of Steven Spielberg. The new Indiana Jones movie is set in the 1950s and stars Shia LaBeouf, Cate Blanchett, John Hurt, Ray Winstone and Jim Broadbent. The Lucasfilm Ltd. production will be released by Paramount Pictures worldwide on May 22, 2008.

Who is the "enemy" going to be? The Soviets/Communists?
I know that Spielberg would never have Nazis as villains in his movies ever again after filming "Schindler's List." He says there is no way to make light of them or show them as part of entertainment; they were just too evil.
Has he made any similar claims about other groups (like the Communists)?

TVShowsonDVD.com reports that Paramount Home Entertainment will release "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles - Volume 1" on DVD October 23. There will be a total of three volumes. The 1992-1993 series, executive produced by George Lucas, starred Sean Patrick Flanery as Indiana Jones and George Hall as Dr. Henry 'Indiana' Jones, Jr.
This show aired during my freshman year in college, so needless to say, I never saw it.
Has anyone here? Was it any good?
All I know is that it featured the last time Harrison Ford suited up as Indiana Jones after Last Crusade.

That is what Wikipedia says, but I hope he ends up having a more substantial role. It might be too hokey if he is the "Son of Indy" but having Shia as an apprentice of sorts might be cool. A gifted student that Dr. Jones tries to "pass the torch" to might work.

I'll have to look it up but I do recall a few being found in Mexico and South America. Here is a question for all of you Indiana Jones fans (including myself). Would you consider all of the Indiana Jones movies to be shot or geared to look like a B Movie?
A B Movie is defined as a low budget and short, and secondary movie. I am involved in a discussion on the SuperHeroHype boards about this, and a lot say it is total B Movie.
I don't think it is a B Movie.
Furtherman
05-08-2008, 10:12 AM
The original was shot as a tribute to the Serial movies of the 30's & 40's which George Lucas & Steven Spielberg enjoyed as kids.
If it was done in true Serial fashion, it would look like this:
<embed src="http://xml.truveo.com/eb/i/2471988188/a/58ef677afb89fc040e3dec6de7dd6c26/p/1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355" ></embed>
You'd have to come back to the theater the following week to see what happened next.
I guess Serials could be considered "B" type movies, but I think to label it a "B" type, it would have to be a full feature.
I think Temple Of Doom would come closest to "B", only because Harrison Ford was the only big name in the movie, whereas everyone else was relatively unknown.
Last Crusade was not a "B" movie at all.
So I would say no, they are not "B" movies.

I don't think it's supposed to be a "B Movie" I thought it was supposed to be a 1980s version of the serials of the 1940s that George Lucas saw as a kid.

Explanation: Everyone thought LW numba fohr would suck a fat dick. As a result, everyone loved the movie when it came out because it exceeded everyone's lowered expectations.
Evidence: In spite of being just average movies, there's been a trend over the past decade with blockbuster sequels that reach #4 tend to do well at box-office and get better reviews than they deserve, simply 'cuz everyone doesn't think it'll be good. Die Hard 4, so on.

I love Raiders, I'm a big Indy fan, and I give the movie a B. I've seen it twice already and it good, but it tends to be derivative of the other three movies and it seems to lack something, like an epic moment or a real sense of excitement.
I give it a B- and rank it third of the Indy movies.

I agree. B- and ranked 3rd if you are comparing the 4 "Raiders" films.
I enjoyed it but it does seem to demand a much greater suspension of disbelief than the other 3 Indiana Jones.

They hint at that, He picks up the hat and is about to put it on (I was about to throw up) then Indy takes it back and puts in on himself. Sorry to ruin that scene but this is spoiler-vision!
Most people figured out that he was Indy's son. Turns out he is named Henry Jones as well. There is now a cycle of the son having a nick name the father doesn't like (Indy asks him what kind of name is Mutt, but before anyone knows that he is his son) and the son being called "Junior" but his father. Henry Jones I is dead, but you still see Sean Connery. Lucas loves that kind of repetition, he even has Indy say "I have a bad feeling about this" which I don't remember from the other Raiders films but Harrison did say at least once in the Star Wars films
In the first half hour or so Indy survives a few things that should have killed him, including a nuclear blast at close range.

05-22-2008, 08:57 PM
I just saw this and am completely disappointed with it. As a fan of Lucas, Spielberg, Ford, and the entire Indiana Jones franchise, I went into this with medium expectations hoping to be blown away. Instead I was incredibly angry at the fact that I spent $10.75 on something that I could have just waited 3 months and got it on Blu Ray.
My warning light about this being a shitty movie came right up to the part “ancient Mayan temple”. Why is it that most action or exploration films these days have to deal with either the mystical city of gold or some unexplored Mayan temple? Yes I know history is important and interesting but when 3 films (Ruins, NT2, this) within the last 6 months do the exact same location, it only exasperates that Hollywood is running out of ideas. As I’m listening to Indy explain to his new young comrade about how it’s “guarded away and no one as explored it” I immediately felt “ugh not again”.
As it was pointed out, this is almost the exact same plotline as Nation Treasure 2 (seeking the lost city of gold), only with an even more retarded element of the crystal skulls. I didn’t mind the idea of the crystal skull at first because it was pretty intriguing. However, it lost all its interest when the film reached halfway and became stupid. Mysteries lose their appeal when you explain them, which is why you should save them for the fucking end of the film. As the film went on, the plot became more convoluted with new elements and twists; but in this case it just felt like they were trying to cram as much story plots into the film as possible. Not good. And don’t get me started on the completely retarded ending (not the last 2 minutes that was fine and well but I mean the end of the exploration part).
Did the film have good action sequences? Definitely and they were very well, but even some of those lost their appeal with the whole “let’s include animals and Tarzan” part. What is it with Hollywood’s new need to have small bugs and creatures kill and eat people? It worked well in The Mummy the first time and was generally pants-wetting but when ever action adventure movie started to include them it because overdone and lost it’s appeal.
Was the film terrible? No. It still had its charm thanks to the terrific musical score and Harrison Ford playing one of his most beloved characters. The good action sequences worked well and the dialogue had a lot of wit. I think the best way to explain this film is that it feels more like an expansion pack then a totally new movie. It takes the elements of the old ones, takes parts newest action adventure movies, throws in a few new things, and calls itself a sequel 20 years later. This worked well in movies like Rocky and Rambo but didn’t do anything for me in this film. Overall all this is going to do is anger big time Indy fans that are going to refer to the first three films as “the original trilogy” and pretend this one never existed. I was totally dissatisfied with this film. C+. I just hope that after this film made Lucas and Spielberg millions of dollars, they don’t make Harrison Ford wear a black vest, carry a laser gun, and start talking to a wookie again.

The single greatest problem with this new Indy movie is: the STORY is weak.
NOBODY in the audience seems to know what the F is going on.
Exactly WHAT is the Crystal Skull... what does it DO... what powers does it have... how & why do the Russians know about it... how'd they lose it.... how do THEY know what powers it possesses.... why is it that only sometimes it's AMAZINGLY magnetized and other times, it isn't... why did it make "Ox" go into a catatonic state.... how did Ox get from Alien temple to Alien temple and back, AND LIVE TO TELL ABOUT IT??... how did the Russians know that making Indy look into the skulls eyes wouldn't make him catatonic but, rather, would somehow make Ox come out of his coma-state..... why the F was Marion the supercoolest stuntdriver in the world who would literally yawn when her & her child were going over cliffs and waterfalls....
and on and on and on.
These are questions that nobody had after RAIDERS. Or the other two! Only this installment.
I had this same feeling of disgust after watching the SW prequels. I just never fully understand anything or anyones motivation. The audience NEVER fully understood what was going on. This also applies to The Matrix films. And to a lesser extent... Superman Reborn (or whatever it was called).
These films rely on spectacle and images. The audience doesn't give a damn and THAT is why I see sooo many people texting & going to the bathroom. People like these movies on a very superficial level... if at all.

Saw the movie yesterday and it isn't good. I won't give too much away but man - if you were on the fence about spending the money to see it-----don't. Regardless of what you think of the Indiana Jones story of movies, this one is so horribly out of place; it just makes you wonder if Speilberg/Ford had any intention other than a HUGE payday.
The story was so weak, Kate Blanchet went in and out of her accent so many times, there was overuse of CGI and why does the inclusion of little woodland animals matter so much in these movies anymore? Monkeys and prairie dogs add ZERO to the story and the thought of Shia Lebouf swinging through the jungle with those monkeys is just ridiculous. Harrison Ford's acting is well----like Harrison Ford's acting. Its so bad; its almost good to watch him bomb so miserably. There are a couple of lines that were delivered so poorly that I was the guy who was laughing openly out of place during parts of the film where laughter wasn't intended.
Certain elements of the story remind me of THE LORD OF THE RINGS and I swear they lifted some lines from one of my favorite movies, The Hunt For Red October. "...I am become death..." Remember that? The ancient Hindu text.....well, that was a portion of Red October.
Oh----and the ending of the movie-------my God the ending!!!!!
Again, I don't want to give too much away, but you have got to be kidding me.
On a scale of 1 Crystal Skull to 5 Crystal Skulls, 5 being the best:
I give this 1/2 Crystal Skull.
Just Awful.

Exactly WHAT is the Crystal Skull... what does it DO... what powers does it have... how & why do the Russians know about it... how'd they lose it.... how do THEY know what powers it possesses.... why is it that only sometimes it's AMAZINGLY magnetized and other times, it isn't... why did it make "Ox" go into a catatonic state.... how did Ox get from Alien temple to Alien temple and back, AND LIVE TO TELL ABOUT IT??... how did the Russians know that making Indy look into the skulls eyes wouldn't make him catatonic but, rather, would somehow make Ox come out of his coma-state......
I just got back from seeing the movie and can answer everyone of these questions. The story wasn't weak... but some of the writing certainly was. A couple of scenes were choppy due to a lack of smooth editing, but overall it was a fun ride.
The monkey scene did make me cover my face and cringe.
Overall, it was just as an Indiana Jones movie should be. Watching the other three this past week, this movie falls nicely as the third best. It's still better than Temple Of Doom.
I enjoyed it.

What bugged me about this movie (among other things) was that they really went out of their way to keep bringing up the fact it's the 50's. You have the American Graffiti kids racing the army for no reason, Elvis songs, Howdy Doody playing for no reason, "I like Ike", and probably a few more I can't think of. I mean, there were references to the 30's in the old ones, but this seemed incredibly blatant.
And what was with the groundhogs? Was it supposed to be a Caddyshack reference for some reason?

... "...I am become death..." Remember that? The ancient Hindu text.....well, that was a portion of Red October.
To be fair that is a famous quote that is linked to Nuclear weapons and that was the reference in Indy #4:
Robert Oppenheimer, American physicist and director of the Manhattan Project quoted The Bhagavad Gita "I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds." upon witnessing the world's first nuclear test in 1945.
Test director Kenneth Bainbridge replied to Oppenheimer, "Now we are all sons of bitches." Kate Blanchet mentioned him by name. They are not ripping off The Hunt for Red October.
This was also recently mentioned in the Terminator TV show, and again they mentioned Oppenheimer and added the Bainbridge line which I don't think was mentioned in Indy #4.

Sets looked fake, no cool Nazi futuristic air planes, Harrison is getting a little long in the tooth to be believable for the stunt sceens, and way too much CGI. I want my $10 back.

#4.
I never indicated that the line was conceived by Tom Clancy in Red October, but you're telling me that the only reference to the testing of nuclear weapons could come form that example? Granted Oppenheimer would be obvious to quote in that situation, but the context of the scene just reminded me so much of Red October that it was just funny. It just seemed like Crystal Skull was cheap in every way.

Furtherman got just about everything right. Only I would say that this was about even with Last Crusade. I loved the homages to American Graffiti, and Shia Lebouf's character fits well into the Jones-universe. The explanations do kinda fly by, but if they fly by in a movie like Silence of the Lambs, critics assume that's because it's smart. The negative reviews here are because it's the 4th sequel in a series and there's an expectation of shittiness. But it's still a 3 star movie, and the magic is definitely still there.

And the "sets" from the other movies didn't? They were made the same way. It was set in 1957. What "cool Nazi futuristic air planes" were you expecting considering there were no Nazis to be found in this movie?
This movie will be suffering from a lot of false outrage with it in the next coming weeks, but it still will turn out to be one of, if not the, biggest hit of the year. Because people enjoy it. I plan on seeing it again.

That would in the opening of Temple Of Doom, which had an entire Broadway production.
Raiders and Crystal Skull are not meant to be viewed side by side and compared. If anything, there wasn't any cheap callbacks to any of the previous movies with recycled lines. If you want to see a glaring example of that, watch Radiers and then Last Crusade. Those two movies are extremely more similar and recycled than Crystal Skull would be with any of the movies. Still fun, but Last Crusade was more formulatic in its script.

Cool Nazi futuristic air planes give a certain WOW factor that was missing. I just didn't buy into the surroundings and sets as much as first one. Just one man's opinion.

I liked the movie. As Furtherman said, I can answer all of those questions after seeing it. I liked the fact that it was more of a period piece than the other films. I thought it looked terrific, but yes the story was a bit strange for an Indy movie, and yes the tarzan scene was not very good.

That is not the only reference they could have made, but it is a real life example of someone at the beginning of a major change in warfare technology which is what that Russian lady (Doctor Colonel something) thought she was about to do with the psychic skull thing.
I'm not defending the movie, it was silly. But that reference goes way beyond Red October Starring Henry Jones I

"I've got a bad feeling about this."
I mentioned that last week (but in spoiler font) I am pretty sure it was not said in an Indiana Jones movie before, I think Lucas just got confused when writing this one. Lucas LOVES call backs.
George Lucas talked to Fox News about a possible fifth Indiana Jones movie:
Speaking in Cannes, where Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull premiered over the weekend, Lucas told the news service that he and director Steven Spielberg have left the door open for another sequel. Lucas was a guest May 15 at Paramount/DreamWorks' party for Kung Fu Panda at the 61st Cannes Film Festival.
"I haven't even told Steven or [star] Harrison [Ford] this," Lucas said. "But I have an idea to make Shia [LeBeouf] the lead character next time and have Harrison come back, like Sean Connery did in the last movie. I can see it working out."

I'd like to see a prequel with Connery, but that's just me. Besides, Harrison Ford is the constant in this series. He should probably be the focus
"I've got a bad feeling about this" is a callback, but it's common enough that it isn't quite a cheap catchphrase.

There's nothing to "get." There's no need to be so abrasive practically every time someone responds to one of your points. Your post sounded like you were saying the line was ripping off a line from HFRO, and Doc Manhatan was explaining why he didn't think that was the case. I still don't see why he has to "get over himself" for that.

The movie is out on DVD now and I just rented it.
Most of the reviews earlier in this thread are accurate. The stupid story didn't bother me as much as some although the ending is as bad as everyone says. There's a "making-of" documentary in the special features section. Big surprise, the "inter-demensional beings" and the space craft were George Lucas' ideas.
The thing that I didn't like was Shia LeBouf's character. I didn't buy him as the tough motorcycle rebel for a second. And Karen Allen (who didn't look as bad as people elsewhere were saying) seemed so happy to be working again, she's smiling just about all the time.
Overall, though, good mindless sequel to the franchise. Rent it if you haven't seen it.

It doesn't work once you leave the cave, thats why the knights lived to be super old but died on their pilgrimage home. So they used the grail to heal his wounds and save his life but he's goes back to being an old man once he leaves.
