After our nuptuals in September, we want to experience the Grand Canyon, then Vegas. We've never been there but would prefer the North Rim since Las Vegas is a closer drive from the North Rim. I'm trying to find the BEST suite for my Sweet but the Grand Canyon Resort is sold out! Money is no object as we want the best of everything for our honeymoon. We want mules to do down deep. We would consider minor hiking. Maybe some watersports.

Short of renting a Winnebago, where would you stay if you were going to the Grand Canyon?

We went to the Grand Canyon this summer but didn't hike down. The North Side was on fire and basically closed so we never got there.

I hope you get to stay at the best place you can find but if all of the best places are taken, Tusayan had some nice hotels and were just minutes to get to the park.

If you somehow wind up in Sedona, I can highly recoommend the Amara Creekside there. Lake Powell is awesome too if you are traveling that way. Congrats and good luck.

I'm pretty sure the mule ride is Bright Angel Trail only, and begins on the South Rim.

I've only been to the North Rim once, but I didn't see any mules there.

And I've seen mules half of the dozen or so times I've been to the South Rim.

When I was there there was a lot less going on in the North Rim. South Rim is where most of the tourist stuff goes on. I think North Rim has helicopter rides though. It's also more likely to be on fire, as already alluded to.

This will be one of the highlights of our trip! I've been on top of the Empire State Building and the outside view is pretty high up there. When I went to the Twin Towers, they made the windows so you could look down and it was scary being up that high. I just pressed my face into the glass and stared. I better not do any face pressing here! I'm lucky if I look over the side! I will though...

I hear like 90 people a year fall into the North, South, East, & West Canyon Rims. I better be careful!

I would like to go to the West Rim first, spend a few nights, then head out to Sin City. If the South Rim is that much better, then I guess we'll have to go there too, but the West Rim looks just as good. My spine cannot take too much driving, so the West Rim seems like the best choice if I'm going to drive to Vegas afterwards. Vegas is like 2.5 hours from the West Rim. I want to do Vegas LAST in case I lose alot of money so it wont stick in my craw the whole trip. (stick in my craw = on my mind) I guess my plane would land in Arizona then we'd rent a nice 4x4.

This place looks kinda cool:

I don't know a THING about Vegas. Since Sweety doesn't gamble, we'll be doing things like shows, swimming, spas ect...I'll definitely be playing cards. I definitely want to bet on some football which you can't do in Atlantic City. I'm sure the hotels offer alot of fun stuff. We need a honeymoon resort with alot of natural features like trees and greenery. Def. first class all the way because I'm never getting married again. We love places like the Polynesian Resort in Florida, lots of palm trees, bamboo, and water.

I would also like to find one of those hooker sting operations on the street and ask the cop to repent and pray with me. I just think that would be funny to do.

Did I miss anything?

Ed:

Couple of things.

1) The trip from Phoenix to Vegas sucks. You're much better off flying directly into McCarron and renting a car there. Sky Harbor (PHX) also has massive taxes on rental cars, nearly 25%. I'm not sure if you can fly directly into Flagstaff from EWR, you may have to change over to a smaller plane.

With the fuel costs and rental taxes, I'm not sure if you'd save any money flying into AZ if you want to do Vegas.

2) Resorts in Vegas - you may want to contact a travel agent and see what kind of packages they have there. The top-end resort hotels are the Venecian, Bellagio, Wynn, and a few others. I got a very nice deal for three nights at Bellagio, plus your travel agent can get you bells and whistles and package tour deals.

PM me if you want more info, I've been doing research.

Just an FYI, the Skywalk is now open! (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/6469941.stm)
Buzz Aldrin was the first across.

The South Rim is very touristy and congested. But it is the only place you can get a mule ride. There is a beautiful hotel right on the rim of the canyon (South Rim) called El Tovar. It has good service and excellent dining. There is a pretty good steakhouse next door as well.
The North Rim, being more isolated, is more quiet. There is a nice lodge there, and people stay in cabins. Hiking is good from either side.

Anyone who goes to the Skywalk is insane. Actually... I'd love to see it, but there's no way I'd actually go on it.
Check out this YOUTUBE VIDEO (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BvzlZuWrJNw). What really freaks me out (about the size of the canyon, not necessarily the skywalk) is how the helicopter becomes a tiny dot, around the 2:20 spot.
PS... I know I posted this video somewhere. I hope it wasn't here. I'm not part of their ad agency. It's just that the thing fascinates/scares the hell out of me.

I just realized you said the Grand Canyon Resort was sold out. Tusyan is right outside the park, and you can get a hotel there but it's nothing nice. Flagstaff is an hour and a half away with better lodgings. Sedona has some nice places like Enchantment Resort and Amara.

Having lived in Arizona 30 years, I strongly suggest the south rim. Stay at the Bright Angel Lodge or in one of their cabins. You are only like 5 feet away from the rim edge. It is also the check-in place for the mule rides you are thinking about.

didn't anybody notice that?
seriously. i know you're looking for mostly a swanky b&b more than camping, but i guarantee you will not be disappointed if you go to "dead horse point" in utah. in my experience, it's definitely the best view of the canyons and the river, and not too far from where you're going to be anyway (it's all relative when you can drive 100mph)
