I don't mind if he opens my mail, as long as he pays the bills he opens. Everything else I get is either junk mail, or birthday/christmas/easter cards from my grandmother.

But seriously, Bush just wants to do away with the three branches of government and install himself as dictatorer. This isn't anything new.

I missed the "warrant" part and figured he was finally all grown up and opening his own mail, soon he'll be walking upright and wiping his own ass.

what has happened to this country? I dont want to hear 9/11. They keep using that as an excuse for everything and all these stupid fuckers fall for it. The right is suppose to not want big govt. and they are suppose to be the "conservative" spenders. Someone else said this feels like Russia, well it may even be worse. We have lost so much freedom in this country.

A lot of people that have their conspiricy theories about 9/11 and are said to be nuts/crazy. Well the more shit like this that happens and the more they use "well we were attacked we need to protect ourselves, we need to do whatever we need to, I will give up freedoms b/c we were attacked" Makes me believe that those conspiricy theory people are right about 9/11 that the govt did this, b/c they have scared Americans to let the govt do as they want.

Enough is enough. I stll dont understand how he was elected in 2000 but what is even more shocking is how after all that he has done how the fuck did we re-elect this adm in 2004. You can not defend the adm at all. They have done nothing for this country. The economy is shit. Yeah the #s look good on paper but the rich got richer and middle class isnt even middle class. The gap has just widened. We are not safer, we are hated around the world, our education is over priced at all levels yet our scoring continues to go down and doesnt compare with the rest of the world.

This is just sad what has happened to Our America, it has been hijacked and not by muslims.

I'm torn about this one. I didn't mind the phone tapping when the story came out because I always figured they'd be able to listen whether or not you liked it or if it was illegal. They've been doing that for decades. And yes, I did take the "If you're not doing anything illegal, then don't worry about it" stance.

And now this.

This is the U.S. Mail - the best mail system in the world and a huge part of our country's beginning. It helped bring us all together. Who didn't love hearing the mail slot bang when you were a kid and run to the door to see if you got any? Waiting for the Sears catalogue to see the new toys! Letters on your birthday that you knew held cash? That's a good memory.

Now, if you read the article you'll see that the law actually reinforces protections of first-class mail from searches without a court's approval.

That's a good thing.

But it's the declaring the right to open people's mail under emergency circumstances that troubles me.

If there was another anthrax scare - I don't think people would mind if there were precautions taken to open their mail if there is reason to suspect anthrax. If there are mail bombs going off - same thing. I don't think you need to declare that in an emergency situation you're going to do that. I'd like to think common sense would have you do that anyway.

So now I just don't trust this. I do think Bush is abusing power.

And he's not smart enough to abuse power correctly.

But whoever is pulling the strings certainly has their reasons. I was willing to budge on the phones, as I think sacrifice is needed to be protected, but now the slide down the slippery slope has started. And you know what that means. Men marrying cows!!

Shouldn't those agreeing with Bush see a problem? HE'S SETTING A PRECEDENT! There will be other politicians down the road (those THEY don't trust) who'll be able to open their mail and listen to their phone calls. I wouldn't give anyone that much power.

But if they still trust Bush seeing that as a potential problem may be asking a bit much.

A year or so ago, when the NYPD implemented random bag searches on the subway my co-workers and I debated the government taking away our freedoms for security.

It became pretty heated, as two of us were extremely liberal/borderline anarchist and my co-workers were republicans. It's amazing how they were willing to give away our rights then, and it just keeps going. Our ultimate argument was, "Why not just strip all of us of our rights and throw us in prison? That would guarentee no more terrorism."

I think our government should be looking for the happy medium between security and civil rights. When you throw away your civil rights, the term "freedom" no longer means anything.

In the words of Benjamin Franklin:

Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.

Can the rubes in this country please stop handing off our Essential Liberties?!

Opening letters and censoring information was soooooo bad in World War II troops and families were getting other people's letters in their envelopes. There was a whole section of the Post Office whose job was to read the mail going to and from soldiers overseas.

Having just posted that, I think the Prez has stepped over the line. Let's hope Congress will pull him back. I sort of am okay with the wiretaps, and the email crap has been around since McVeigh bombed the Murrah building with Reno investigating the militias. (I'm a right wing kook, and I thought that was a GOOD thing.)

But what is his reasoning for opeining mail? Does he have evidence that there is a plot or something?

Despite the President's statement that he may be able to circumvent a basic privacy protection, the new postal law continues to prohibit the government from snooping into people's mail without a warrant," said Rep.
