What is it about the FreeFM show that energizes Fez?˙ He seems much more relaxed and he's really involved in the show.˙ It totally changes the vibe.

Love the XM too.˙ This is just different.˙ Much more like the old WNEW days lately.

It's probably the fact that it's in the evening and he's more awake.

The whole show is different at FreeFM.˙ ˙Everyone in the studio seems more lighthearted and there's quite a bit of laughing that you don't hear on the XM show.˙ The callers are adding a whole bunch too.˙ Its all positive which probably gets Fez into the groove.

I say this in the most non-negative way possible...but I don't think R&F are meant to be a national show. They seem most comfortable really getting to "know" their audience...they seem to welcome fan involvement more than any other radio show I've ever heard, and it's gotta be damn hard to cultivate that kind of relationship with your listeners on a national scale. It seems like it would be a lot easier to "know" your audience when most of them are living and seeing and doing the same things you are pretty much every day. Sorry, rest of America, but R&F really seem in their element focusing on the East Coast, especially New York. The boys aren't ever not on their game, but I think they really hit their stride when they're not trying to appeal on some level to as many people as possible.

In short, national radio stinks. I know the money's gotta be good, but it kills shows quality-wise.

Before the NEW days, Ron and Fez were on a popular morning show that was syndicated throughout the south east. So it's not as if XM exposed them to "hayseed" listeners.

i'd say being on FM causes Ronnie to slow down a bit and it gives Fez more airtime. Ronnie can't just go off on " blue tirades " and fill alot of airtime with " blue comments " throughout the show. he definitely needs more support from Fez on free FM

not saying it's a bad or good thing...

As much as I hate to admit it, the New York calls have been pretty fucking funny...the speed with which people called in to make fun of Stinkbomb by calling in on cans and string was great...is it because everyone's off work? Is East Coast really funnier than the rest of the country? Hard to tell. But the show has been fast and furious out of the gate.

I think it's the time of day + New York which leads the better callers.

The show has the same staff. The only change is the time, audience, and FCC regs.

It's not a knock on DC, or the National audience. It's just the way I've seen it.

I think its cause Fez knows if he wasn't doing a show at night he'd just be sitting in shower thinking alone eating oreos. It makes him happier to do a show at night then watch a ghost jerk off.

Are people outside of NYC allowed to call into the FREEFM show?

I think having a seven minute break every twenty minutes is helpful. Opie claims his energy is higher and he's more focused on FM also. You can burn yourself out a little bit and then regroup, unlike at XM where you know you've got another 45 minutes until the break.

If I were Ron, I'd encourage Fez to jump in and out like Dave, only more frequently "in" than ESD. Like getting a fighter to give three solid minutes and then towel off and have a drink... Fez might just need fourteen minutes of comedy and then a bathroom break or a cry break or something.

Some of the best XM callers are old WNEW or WJFK callers. Ron didn't call the callers on WNEW (and later on in the era, WJFK) the best callers in radio for no reason. Have a listen to the old FM shows, the callers were really on point. Comedy Pyramids don't just come from nowhere.

I love what the uncensored XM show brings, but I am really enjoying the FM version as well. Its very nice to listen live for a change.

If you are an XM fan and you want to get a taste of the FM version, be creative, look around. When they left WNEW there were ways for people to find the shows online. If you have an mp3 player, you can still listen to those shows (inno people anyone?). I have never missed a show, even after they left NY. Having a "pause" button really makes for better listening.

I have to agree with Mojo and Tenbats on this one.....the boys are more comfortable on the East Coast.....or should I say...NY....they actually know their fanbase....The few times I call the show....Fezzy knows me....and is confortable with that....Ronny likes to know who he is talking to!!!! That's my 2 cents!!!

My observations are that the "good ole' boy" truck drivers that call the XM show are wearing on Ron and Fez. Nothing against this demographic but their phone calls don't bring a lot of quick wit that is important to a radio show. You can hear the frustration on Ronnie's voice he tells them to go ahead with their comment and there's a long, momemtum killing pause followed by a rather lame, non-topical comment. The FM show appears to draw callers that are true radio people that understand the importance of getting to the point. Just my 2 cents.

I guess that answers a question I had about the show. I've been listening to the bits from the old show from the file library, and it seemed that Fez was a lot more involved. I was wondering what changed when they went to XM, thought maybe it was the heart attack. I haven't been able to listen for the last couple of months, but it sounded like he was getting more active on the XM side, too. Or am I wrong about that?

R&F may be better suited to a local audience, but PLEASE don't take them away from me. It's the only thing I'll listen to anymore.
