Before you all lose your minds and scream "Wait a minute, G...I thought you were single!" let me assure all of you that I am indeed free and unattached. (Women - feel free to send nude pics.) I'm talking about divorcing myself from something I've been mentally, emotionally, and financially attached to for over 30 years. I've given everything I could into this relationship and received nothing but heartbreak in return. It's been like a marriage where the wife doesn't work, cook, clean, put out, or contribute in any way. How in the world am I supposed to remain loyal to such a sadistic and uncaring mate?

I'm talking, of course, about the Cincinnati Bengals. I've been an ardent supporter and die hard fan since childhood and have been shit on time and time again by those bastards. I've purchased thousands of dollars worth of merchandise emblazoned with their logo over the years, and have attended every game they've played in the New York area (against the Jets or Giants) since 1974. I got to see them get to the Super Bowl twice, only to be beaten by Joe Montana and the 49ers both times. Aside from a couple of AFC Championships there's been very little to cheer about.

I threatened to jump ship a few years ago because the ownership seemed to care very little about winning, but when they hired Marvin Lewis as their head coach and actually allowed him to hire some scouts and have input on the draft I decided to renew my loyalty. It appeared they were heading in the right direction after successive 8-8 seasons and even won their division last year. This year, however, it was the same old Cincinnati slide. Eight (yes, 8) different players on the team were arrested for a variety of violations and the team returned to mediocrity with another 8-8 year.

I've had enough. I've decided I'm not going to continue putting myself through hell for this team any more. This is a brand new age that we're living in, and if players can change teams whenever they please, why not the fans? Think of me as a free agent supporter. I'll go wherever I get the greatest return.

The last thing I want to do is give my heart to a new team and have them destroy me somewhere down the road just like the Bengals have, so I've come up with a solution to that problem also. My loyalty will be like a cell phone contract - 2 years. For 24 months, the team of my choice will have my undying support and devotion. At the end of the contract, however, it is entirely my choice whether I decide to renew or walk away. I might even remain a fan on a month-to-month basis, keeping my eyes peeled for a better deal elsewhere.

Go ahead, call me disloyal or a bandwagon fan. Just think about me the next time the superstar of your favorite team leaves for a few more bucks somewhere else.

I'm waiting until August when the exhibition games start before I pick my new NFL team, but I'll be sure to let you all know when I do. I just hope there's no early termination fee if they shit the bed right out of the gate.

gvac, im in the same boat as you. i dont think the buffalo bills could rip my heart out any more than they already have. i mean, 4 SUPER BOWLS IN A ROW!!?!?!? WTF??? then the recent years of losman, dealing with rob johnson, and the suckiness of bledsoe, that forward lateral against tenessee, wide right, etc., etc., etc,. ive wanted to quit being a bills fan many times but im sticking with them. what if cincy wins the super bowl next year? would you be a fan of them again? stick with your team, it sucks when they lose but if, and when, they win it all, you can say you've been there through all the shit.

Unless you pick the team before training camp you are a front runner. I believe you can switch teams but it has to be a team that is bad right now. That way you have some pain before the glory. You can't transfer you pain from the Bengals. Pick now or your stuck with them next year.

at least your teams have gone to the Superbowl in your lifetime. I'm a Chiefs fan and i'd take a playoff win. and to make it worse we are stuck with Herm Edwards. but i can never dump them. they break my heart all the time, but i come back for more year after year.

we would be more then happy to have you over in gold country.

Where your team failed to win the big one you can now translate those losses into found memories.

The niners are a very young team with a lot of upside and a dynamic offense with great young talent.

I hear ya, GVAC.

The Danny Snyder Redskins era has made it very tough to remain a fan - I can't switch loyalties, tho - I'd rather give up on the sport completely - too much time and emotion invested with the team (if the Colts had remained in Baltimore, that might be another story) - I just go into each season with a level of dread and drunken hope. In some ways, having been to the mountain top (5 Super Bowl appearances in my lifetime, and 3 wins) makes coming back to reality worse - especially when you look at how much worse things really did get since that last win 15 years ago.

At least these days, I now have baseball to look forward to when the Skins shit the bed - that's something new to me.

Why wait till August!

GO PATRIOTS!!!

Everyone knows they're winning it all...again. Do you really think a young QB like Rivers is gonna beat Brady this week in crunchtime?

That's like 4/6 Superbowls now? Yeah, I'm on the bandwagon. Brady reminds me of Joe Montana.

gvac how are u bitching about ur bengals when they at least got to the superbowl? im a jets fan and im 22, ive never seen my team int eh superbowl and im still a huge fan. i think it was superclerk who said it best when talking about the mets, i love them like i would love my retarded son.

u lost to the best qb arguably ever. i hate michael jordan for stopping my knicks from bringing home at least three championships in the 90s. but im still a knick fan, even with the worst owner in sports. and because of the ownership i wont buy anything with the knicks logo on it because i know hes amking a dime off it. but i still like the team.

feel good about this: you have the third best qb in the game on ur team, the best wideout, and the most underrated back in the league. if u improve your defense then u have a championship shot, gvac i even predicted ur bengals would be at the superbowl this year, so dont blame your team blame ME.

I understand the disappointment you are feeling. I am a Phillies fan who was too young for the 80 team. The better part of my life the Phillies were (with the exception of the 93 season) baseballs laughing stock. Futhermore I played baseball pretty much from the time I could walk through college so it really hurt that something I put so much passion in, a sport I pretty much breathed 24/7 365 playing and as a fan, to a team that lost 90 to 100 games summer after summer. Every year was wait till next year, then in the off season they would trade for some way past there prime pitcher and maybe over pay via free agency for some outfielder on the decline. Year after year repeat. But hope springs eternal and every April I would have hope, only to have that hope dashed by mid May. As much as it sucked I could never bail on that team. That's my team!!! I poured my blood sweet and tears into them for so many years. The highs (very few), the lows (far more common). How many arguments did I have in grade school, high-school, in the dugout, in the bars, etc supporting the team that deep down I knew wasn't going to win, but still defended. I try to think of how much sweeter it will be if they win a championship. I will definitely appreciate that more having endured all this heartache.

So I am pleading you to go back home sit down and talk this through. You can reach a solution. You don't need to get a divorce. We are catholic we don't believe in divorce.

And as a side issue not really dealing with above but you did mention in your post. Just because players go somewhere else for more money doesn't discourage me ever from rooting for my team. Lets make that point relative to us. Lets say you are making $75,000 at your job and the guy down the street offers you $150,000 to do the same job, what are you going to do? Say no I won't take a 50% raise? If you would it puts you in a very small minority.

Phillies in 2007!!!!!!!!!!!!
