View Full Version : If there was a draft...

...What would you do? Would you go there and fight with your fellow American, serve your country though it may mean getting your body maimed or destroyed? Would you bite the bullet like Mohammed Ali, say 'I don't got no quarrel with Iraqis', and go to jail? Would you run off to Canada? I've been asking myself this question lately...

I'd go ahead and retire from the military. As much as people wory about a draft, it would be about the worst thing that could happen to us. I have a hard enough time getting my folks to listen to me, and they're the volunteers. I couldn't imagine having to try to lead someone that was forced in. Not to mention that as far as most of our stuff (I'm AF) requires a fairly high level of knowledge and motivation to operate/maintain. I can't speak for the front line folks, but I personally would hate to have someone covering me that wasn't up to the task. Of course, that's just my opinion, I could be wrong (and have been told that on numerous occasions).

hafast, ive never been in the military but i have always had the same questions about the draft. if someone who is forced in and doesn't want to be there, really be giving his all for the effort?

If i were drafted to go to Iraq, youd find me packed and in my car on the way to Canada. I might even pull the Ali and face the jail time rather than go, I just can't justify going.

But really, there is no difference. I watch your TV channels, get your State of the Union Addresses and feel pain when shit goes down in the States. The only difference is America is Pro-active and Canada is reactive. There is still talks of a draft in Canada, probably for peace keeping missions but talk none the less.

Oh, and it's colder here.

This is something that I've thought very much about recently, mostly because in a year or two I'll be at the age with the biggest risk of being shipped out, and I fear that in a year or two we may still be stuck over there in Iraq. I definitely wouldn't go, there's no way I could bring myself to kill or be killed or maim in that war. Like other's have said, the only war I would fight in is where the United States were actually being invaded, and I don't foresee that happening in the near future. The options that I see are high tailing to Canada, or maybe even Mexico, telling them that I was gay, or even just going to jail. A prison cell would be something I could live with more than fatigues. Even though, or more accurately, because I hate this fucking war, I would support re-instating the draft. Nothing would galvanize the opposition to the war, and bring it to an end faster than people realizing that they, their friends, or there family members could be sent over there whether they liked it or not.

Since I live in this country and enjoy the benefits it provides me, I would have no problem going in the military if drafted.

I guess I am old fashioned in my convictions.

You can all hide out at my place if the draft comes back, those of you coming to Canada anyway. I've got stockpiles of back bacon and beer. And lots of toques.

I enlisted for the Navy back in 1990 during my senior year. I was in the DEPS program until my date of leave which should have been august 1991. Due to the original Iraq war we were so over extended that the military had cut backs and my entry was delayed an additional 6 months. I then was given an honorable discharge because you can not be in the DEPS program more then 12 months.

As for the current question, yes I would go b/c I wouldnt run from the love of my country. At the same time I would make my opinion known and speak out against the war and the president and all his stupid decisions as much as I could until I left.

I do think a draft could happen if Vietnam #2 continues. Eventually something needs to change and I cant wait to hear what "our" president has to say tonight.

I'd go in to the military and jerk off 30 times a day untill they kicked me out for being crazy.
I'd go. I'm expendable.
