Hypnotism is a parlor trick. Originally called Mesmorism, it was a carnival side show act that consisted of folks paid off to act like they have no control over their actions. The stuff done in the studio was a "show", not real. Hypo-therapy can be used to help control habits, stop smoking, relaxing, etc, but it cannot be used to alter a persons being. When it is used to make people act different, it can cause mental damage. What if a "key word" makes them lose control and they end up running off a cliff, stabbing themselves, or other actions that could turn out fatal?

Great work Don, it was an outstanding show!

My only comment is that Don could have been a little higher in the mix. It was tough to hear the setup most of the time. Otherwise, undeniably funny!

I listened to the show live with a buddy of mine that I trust and he told me that he had been put under once and that when he was brought out he was told that he had been lying between two chairs, with only his head and heels on the seats. He believes in it.

That said, and even though its a buddy I really do trust who said it, I still find this really hard to believe. This same bit was done at my college for years (national performers/hypnotists that are on tour) and the same old wacky, over-the-top behavior ensued.

I find it so hard to believe because the idea that in 15-20 minutes someone could surrender their behavior/thinking to another person who is using only words to cause that reaction is too far-fetched. That said, yes, the show was great, but it still sounds like a bit to me.

Maybe I need to experience this myself and if so, I would have to have a better attitude about it or else it wouldn't work, but belief in this seems akin to believing in Santa-something else that is invisible, you have to trust in it for it to work, and nothing about it seems scientific.

The group singing was also really close together for a group of individuals responding spontaneously.

Again, no offense, it was FUNNY AS HELL. The hypnosis part just seems like the setup you need for the punchlines that came later.

The fact is I can de-bunk it more than you can sell it. I was part of a show when one of you "hype"notists put some students under. I was one of them. We were told to play along with the game. Even while the bunch of us were "under", we told folks we would signal if it was fake. A subtle signal, we all did it. True, you can help people with certain problems like smoking, overeateing, etc, but what was on the show was a parlor trick, "smoke and mirrors", whatever you wanna label it. I've worked with magicians too and know about signals.

Don I personally don;t really know if hypnotism is real or not.

Part of me thinks a lot of what is done can really happen but then you see other things that really dont seem to make sense.

The one part that does seem most difficult to believe is that it can be done in such a short period of time and that it can be done to a person by a stranger.

While I have no medical or scientific background or proof I'd think a person's will would be mucg stronger than to accept the suggestions of a person with which they are unfamiliar.

Isnt there some kinda hard-wired code in our brains, reinforaced by years of your parents telling you when you grow up not to trust strangers, that would block this ?

Just curious if any of that makes sense and/or if you know why none of that is the case ?

PS havent listened to the bits yet but I'm checking out your YouTube stuff now.

I do find hypnosis cool to watch much like magic.

The relaxing nature of it is appealing.

But like magic where I know that Criss Angel isnt really passing through the side of an armored car I tend to believe there's some showmanship to hypnosis.

No offense though.

Its funny Stanford University has done a lot of study into hypnosis, why would they waste all the time and money on parlor tricks as you call it. Do you think I or any other hypnotist don't get people who try to fake it? We do all the time but we weed them out pretty quickly. Have you ever read a really good book or watched a TV show and been so focused that you tuned everybody else out? Thats excatly what it feels like and has nothing to do with trust it has to do with your ability and how suggestable a person you are. Now, not everybody goes very deep very fast in hypnosis, and I dont keep everybody who volunteers for a show.

Hypnosis by definition is called a "heightened state of awareness or altered state of conciousness", its not sleep as we would normaly think of it. When in this state of mind, the subconscious mind (the part of us that creates automatic behavior) moves closer to the front of our perception and tends to accept the suggestions that are given. In addition the subconscious is considered the place where your imagination and emotions are experienced. Therefore you experience the suggestions given to you more intensely - which in turn makes them more believable and allows the subconscious mind to begin creating your reality based on the suggestions.

It is often said that the subconscious is like a computer. It does not know right or wrong, good or bad - it just runs programs. The programs (behaviors/beliefs/attitudes) come from many sources but perhaps the most common source is by what you 'think'.

Come to a show sometime, and see it in person and then make a better opinion of whether you accept it or not. Whether you believe in it or not does not matter to me. What matters to me is whether you were entertained. If anyone is seeking hypnosis in the Austin, Texas area, my sister has been doing it for about five years and is very good. I've tried to get her to use her powers for good, and not for evil.

During a drug paranoia thing they did in DC (similar to what was done on Friday) Bitz got so freaked out that he ran out of the studio. Don had to chase after him and bring him back. Once he was back in the room, Don made him a cop, and then changed him to Barney Fife, the Don Knotts character from the Abdy Griffith Show. Somehow, on his own, Bitz changed from Don Knotts on Andy Griffith to Don Knotts on Three's Company, and started spouting lines like the one quoted by Badinia, as Mr. Furly.

It really was great

I can't understand how people think this is fake. We had a hypnotist perform at a Christmas party at my company one year, and he had people I knew and worked with doing things that they would never do unless they were under. One of our salesguys was given the suggestion to keep asking for band aids for a boo boo, and he would put one on his face. When he came out of it later, he had about 15 band aids on his face and was walking around without realizing it until someone finally told him to look in a mirror. No way he was faking it.

And the bit with the Rider arguing with himself had me in tears.
