Is it possible to live off of that in one of the 5 boroughs? I'm a disabled guy and that's all I get from Social Security. The reason I ask is cause I'm originally from Florida, but moved away from everyone I knew 4 years ago to be with a girl here in Louisville. Well, today she walked out on me. I don't want to have to go back to FL and I certainly don't want to stay in this state. I've always loved NYC and traveled there often. I can't drive, so subways are perfect for me. Where I'm at now, there's no public transportation within walking distance, so I'm stuck in my place all day unless someone offers to take me places.

I know there's public housing and section 8, but I don't know the areas in which those places are. I guess a better way to put it would be, would you trust putting your family in a government assisted home?

I dont know about section 8. I would think that 620 a month would be really hard to swing. Maybe at like a bare bones really tight budget theres a way. I doubt I would ever be able to do it.

Like the others have said, I doubt it. It may be possible but you are going to wind up in some fucking hellhole where you won't be living, you'll be surviving.

head back down south, bro. pulling in anything less than a grand a month won't get you anywhere in the Northeast. Hang out down south and make some freinds, it doesn't have to be FL, check out Mobile, AL or somewhere in Mississippi. These are beatiful places to live, no joke. good luck.

its fine if you either want a place to live, but not eat...or want to eat and not have a place to live.

well. I was paying $850 a month for an apartment in Forest Hills 6 years ago. I'm assuming the rates have gone up. so $650 doesn't sound like it'd work in NYC.

I've never heard of somebody tryin that

You could always ask Staler Patti how she does it.

Try upstate NY. In places near Binghamton homes can go for as little as 50Gs (or less) and you'll be about 2-3 hours from NYC by car.

To be honest, I'd be looking at a Fla mobile home if I were you.

I would say don't give up hope, just try and work you way up starting in an affordable place like fla. Are you permanently disabled or is it a temporary thing?

The other part that you forgot to mention was the fact that Valley Stream is a craphole. I should know, I grew up there.

I'm permanently disabled. The $620/month is my total income. If I go back to FL it'll mean moving in with my parents, not just getting my own place. Realistically, you can't live off of $620/month by yourself anywhere in this country. I just got a lucky break here in KY and was hoping that luck could possibly carry me up to NY.

Believe me, I've tried many ways to add more income. I just can't find anything. I meet a job counselor once a week, but nothing turns out. Since I can't drive, I can't get to and from work. I've looked into working from home, but I don't trust services where I have to shell out money first.

Cleveland is a stinking hole of a city, but there are suburban areas that are pretty decent. Public transportation is great, and there are programs where you could rent a decent 2bed apartment for under 100per month. I know a disabled guy who is renting a nice two bedroom place for 65 a month. If I were you though, I'd head south.

this might help: http://www.city-data.com/

Try Massachusetts. I end up working in a lot of public housing places and they arn't all that bad. Boston is a great city. And the XM reception here is excelent. Not many mountains to get in the way.

Here's a little perspective.....................

Me and my wife were born and raised in the Tri-State Area (Me-NJ, Her-NYC) We were making combined $55,000 (after taxes) in 2005. We were nowhere near making ends meet (bills, cars, food, dogs, concerts, etc.) We don't even have kids! Forget tryin' to get a house.

We were in an apt. in Bayonne, NJ. Right next to us they built new condo/townhouses. When they were done in 2004, they were $325,000. 2 years later they went up to $525,000. BTW, our rent was $725/month for a 1 bed, 1 bath.

The writing was on the wall......

So, this past September, after quite a bit of research, we packed up and moved down to North Carolina (as did some friends before and since), near Raleigh. We are now only making about $40,000/year take home. But, we have a really nice apt., payin' the same rent for 2 bed, 2 bath! And the average price of some REALLY nice houses is $200,000!!!!! We figured we'd be able to pay a good chunk of the bills off and get our own house in about 5 years! Something we could NEVER do in the Tri-State area.

The moral of the story....
