I saw the new Guillermo del Toro movie, Pan's Labyrinth, over the weekend and I have mixed impressions.

I loved the monsters and some of the dark undertones, but in the end I didn't find myself caring about any of the characters.

Has anyone else here seen it?

This guy has the coolest art on his walls. :)

Poot and I saw it last night. I really enjoyed it. The root thing under the bed that she had to put in a bowl of milk creeped me out the most. Oh and the Pale monster was super creepy. The ending was eh, so-so...but it did provide a sad and happy ending all at the same time.

I watched this movie this evening and it was fantastic. I'd heard a lot of good things about the movie, but was just floored at how good it was. The story was amazing and the cinematography was just as good.
Its one of those movies where you forget you're reading subtitles within like five or ten minutes of watching because you're so into the story, or at least my wife and I were. Just a plain great movie.

If you like this one you should see his other movie about children coping with the Spanish Civil War - "The Devil's Backbone." It's as good or better.

I totally agree with Yerdaddy- Del Toro says that he thinks of Pan's Labyrinth and The Devil's Backbone as being bookend films, both about the Spanish Civil war, but one from a boy's perspective, and one from a girl's. Both amazing- but this movie is so fantastic in part to the physical work by Doug Jones at the Faun and the Pale Man, the only American on the set- he did us proud.

I absolutely love this guy, you should also check out his take on vampires in Cronos.
He gives great interviews too, about his granmother exorcising him, piles of dead fetusses and his personal saviour being Godzilla.

Pan's Labyrinth is probably the best movie I've seen all year, and I haven't even bothered buying the DVD. I need to get on that. I also agree with the others that Devil's Backbone is pretty great too. I still need to see Hellboy.

i saw it and i loved it. i could give or take the stuff about the little girl and the fairies, but the stuff with "The Captain" was the best shit ever. He is one of the best characters in recent film

It was a very cool family flick it's been so long since I saw something i could watch with my grandparents and little cousins. The ending was eh but a very very good film i thought everyone did an excellent job playing their roles.

i would think that movie would be really really violent for little kids. That scene where they slash the Captain's mouth disturbed me. And i thought the ending was perfect...i love depressing shit

The sewing up of the slit mouth was brutal.
And I agree with Yerdaddy, The Devil's Backbone rocks the slightly fatter ass of the two.

Damn, yeah, this was a good one. One of those flicks that hits all the right notes. Great visuals, asshole villain, satisfying ending; I need to watch this again.

This movie really depressed me. I got the idea that she just made the mythical part up, so when she died she just died. I thought that because when the captain came around the corner in the maze she was talking to the tree thing, He only saw her. It was either the happiest ending ever or that saddest. It was a good movie though. Kept me thinking about it for days.

Saw The Devil's Backbone this evening, on all y'all's suggestion. It was great. I watched it with my wife and another couple and we all thought it was a fantastic movie. However, del Toro is fucking disturbed. This is another DARK movie. But really, really good.
Thanks for the suggestion, people.

I loved the film I just thought it would have been stronger spending more time in the fantasy world and less in the war. I like disappearing into a world as far away from reality as possible.

I agree with you, that is my one and only criticism of the movie so far.

I tells to our personalities, GAZ. I like to be in fantasy worlds, where I think you like the dry humor of life more than I do.
