most recent (it changes every ten years or so as we learn more) theory is that the Sun is not going to take out the Earth (it will disintegrate Mercury and Venus and possible the moon) when it becomes a Red Giant (right around the corner 5 billion years). No one is sure if the Earth will orbit the Sun when it become a White dwarf (lets be honest no one is sure about any of this). If we do then Earth will orbit it for trillions of years. If the moon is not disintegrated by the sun it will face (not orbit) the earth for eternity... unless we blow that fucker up first!!!
