That's that then.

He ended up killed, not due to his attack on these buddhist monuments but because of the life he chose to lead. This was just his pathetic claim to fame.

The act of destroying these beautiful structures shows the cowardice and fear that runs through the masses who follow this religion. What type of thinking would make a person choose to stage this terror on the most gentle souls on earth?

There is no excuse or explanation that anyone can give that would provide reason for the destruction/ attacks on the buddhist people and their beliefs... It's just what they do and who they are.

It's a terrible thing to say on my part but it will never change until they are completely abolished....I guess that makes me no better than them.

My question is why are these people still alive? Why didn't we (the collective USA we) wipe them off the face of the earth years ago? Why did we let them go? The military is/was more than capable of finishing them off, the taliban and al quaeda, but we didn't. WHY?
In the Afghan capital of Kabul, police said a gunman Friday shot and killed a former Taliban official who supervised the destruction of two towering 1,500-year-old Buddha statues, carved in the side of a cliff, during the rule of the fundamentalist militia.

"I undertake the precept to refrain from taking the life (killing) of living beings."

Great news!

There is a local legend there is another giant buddha, but it is buried, lying down. I've read that there is a team searching for it.

Found one!

Archaeologists have discovered a 19-metre (62-foot) Buddha statue along with scores of other historical relics in central Afghanistan near the ruins of giant statues destroyed by the Islamist Taliban seven years ago. (http://in.reuters.com/article/lifestyleMolt/idINISL34253320080908)

The team was searching for a giant sleeping Buddha believed to have been seen by a Chinese pilgrim centuries ago when it came upon the relics in the central province of Bamiyan, an official said on Monday.

"In total, 89 relics such as coins, ceramics and a 19 meters statue have been unearthed," Mohammad Zia Afshar, adviser in the information and culture ministry, told Reuters.

The latest discovery has raised hopes of finding a 300-metre-long Buddha statue that according to an ancient Chinese pilgrim is lying in Bamiyan, Afshar said.

That is great news! I watched a special not too long ago on the Bamiyan Buddahs and they talked to an archeologist who claimed he was confident of finding the sleeping Buddah soon. I hope UNESCO gets this declared as a World Heritage Site ASAP to ensure its protection and preservation.
