hundreds of thousands have rallied in DC in response to the Iraq War. There have been alot of Politicians such as Russ Feingold and John Conyers to de fund the war

http://www.nydailynews.com/news/wn_report/story/492313p-414737c.html

I like how the article you linked to attempts to make anit-US 'Hanoi' Jane Fonda like look the sole leader of this thing. Everything I've read about it so far, which includes newsletters from various groups that are participating, just lists her as one of the celeberties that will be there. I might show up, I'm moving pretty slow today and I actually have things to do.

There was this great piece on Open Source about how the media downplays protests. I think it's totally true.

My friend went jobbing on the Mall in a pro Bush shirt today. Oddly enough he said he didn't get a warm welcome from the protesters.

Those rallies accomplish jack shit politically. At least when the administration is as close-minded to outside opinion as this one. All the protests I participated in 2003 didn't delay the Iraq war by so much as a day. Maybe I'm just cynical. Or just seen it before. You choose.

now lets look at this for a minute with an open mind:

a public gathering of people that want to voice their dislike for the President and his agenda. great. do they think that this will make a difference? Yes. will it? no way. you think he doesnt look at the polls? think he doesnt know that 28% of the people dont like him or the job his doing? he knows it, he just doesnt care. he is not clueless, just full of himself.

I think one reason why this war has continued fairly unabated has been the lack of protest & outrage.

Have you ever see the people at these rallies? Al Shapton, Communists and Socialists, angry fat ass hairy lesbians, stoners of all ages, and most of the rest look like they haven't bathed in ages. The bar scene from Star Wars would be an upgrade. The signs they carry are generally bumper sticker mentality, and those are the good ones. Every other banner has Bush with a Hitler mustache. Its the most extreme, radical political elements that show up for these things and the level of political discourse is abysmal. The last thing anyone against this war wants is some of the wackjobs at these rallies representing their point of view. Makes Bush look like a moderate and a genius by comparison. You should THANK the media for downplaying these protests, if in fact its occuring. Which I doubt seriously.

When do protests usually "do" anything? They exist as a public outlet of expression, opinion and emotion en masse. Anyone decrying them for not "accomplishing something" is tossing out the strawiest of strawmen. Nobody except the incredibly delusional expects any president to step outside and admit being wrong over a bunch of protests.

Protests that worked:

The protests in Moscow, in August of 1991, caused the Soviet coup to fail, leading to the fall of the Soviet Union.

And on a smaller scale, the protests last year at Gallaudet University, got the Interim President of the school removed.

Much as she did in Viet Nam, I think Jane Fonda should go visit the enemy. I'm sure the Taliban would love to have a non-burka wearing loud opinionated female around.

And any protest that has Spicoli up front I can't take seriously.

However, the other half of the crowd is people like me who reluctantly associate with the crazy liberals to show our opposition to the war, simple as that. I usually used to go with my best friend the 91 gulf war vet (interviewed by R&F a few years back) and we'd either fundraise for his Iraq organization or hang out with other vets on the sidelines.

Point is, there is no way to pidgeonhole the people at an anti-war protest.

I'm at the point though where I wouldn't be much interested in a march in Washington that didn't include storming the White House with pitchforks and torches. I mean what's the point?
