Too bad we didn't give away Pavano, eh?

Well Mr Smarty Pants, it was an interesting call to make at the time, and it was early March and nothing else was going on, so it was just something to kick around.

BTW-Anyone know anything about Karstens? He was supposed to see a doctor today and nothing's on the Yankee site. He's almost certainly NOT coming up with the team, given how conservative the Yanks are with injuries, but I'd just like to know.

Kei Igawa’s line this spring: 17 13 5 5 12 19

Daisuke Matsuzaka’s line this spring: 17.2 9 5 4 7 19

thats some interesting stats

Boston should be reeling we got ourselves a dud. ESPN was saying earlier this week that the Yanks were going to ship Igawa to AAA before the injury bug hit. Whats up with that?

i can't wait for baseball to start. pavano gets one more start against the twins before the season. i hope its a good one. i really think he is going to have a decent year. he may start out a little shaky but i see him winning about 15 games this year... listen to how optimistic i am, god i love spring.

I don't know what this means. I wouldn't over react to it. I don't know that Swindal would have been a good or bad owner. Cashman is still young for an executive, I dont think he's going anywhere and they have lots of good baseball people in their organization. With attendance at 4 mil, a new stadium on the way (which will keep it there) all Cashman needs to do is make the playoffs each year. And with his resources and smarts he should be able to do that.

i can see your point on that and to some extent i agree. the team was so hard to cheer for in the '80's but i did it anyway. Mattingly helped with that. but for any to think that George dying is something to be happy about escapes me.

Michael Kay said that he checked into this, and the Steinbrenner family has no intention of selling the team after George is gone. So if you like a hands-off owner (which has its downsides also) you'll LOVE Hank and Hal Steinbrenner. Who by most accounts have little interest in running the team, though Hank has been seen more around Tampa lately.

BTW-He also said that the estate taxes wont be an issue for them either, they've had the accountants take care of that as well. So if they want to keep it, they will.

His sons weren't interested.

As long as they don't sell, keep pouring money back into the team and keep Cashman in charge I'll be fine. I'm just worried that there are any number of idiots in Tampa who have George's ear and have had their hands in some of these awful signings in the last handful of years that could have tried to make a power play. Or George would just try and reassert himself.

I don't want to go back to last year and have Cashman having to fight every step of the way to run the team his way. And losing some of those battles.

That was a problem before Cashman signed his last deal. Now everything baseball goes through him, and he brings it to George. So that's fixed. And by all accounts George does still run the team as he always did. The problem was with who he was getting his info from.
Look, I dont want to flip out about this but I dont want to poo-poo it either. It's definitely an uncertainty how this all plays out. But if the family intends to keep the team, you have to figure they'll run it by George's playbook. He took it from a 10 mil purchase in 73 to a business worth over a billion dollars. They'd be stupid to do otherwise.

I was watching the Yes Broadcast tonight.. Michael Kay was saying, that a Baseball America scout, said, that the Yankees, now have the #5 minor league in all of baseball. Including the top pitching prospect in the game, if you do not count Dice K, in Hughes.. Take the fact that, this minor league, was called baron, just 2, 3 years ago, its amazing what they have done.. To go from one of worst farms in the league, to 5th best, in 2,3 years, is just incredible. I wonder what spoon will say, when we win, with home grown players.. Probably some shit like, THEY USED MONEY THEIR TO BUILD THE FARM.... SALARY CAP IN THE MINOR LEAGUES!!!!!

well all the non yankee fans might, not at his death but what his death could potentially represent

What could it potentially represent?

The only way things change is if the team is sold (which sounds very unlikely), and some corporation buys it up and becomes purely profit-driven. So, they may not spend as much on payroll, but they'll still be able to spend more than anyone else and still turn a profit because they bring in so much money.

The worst-case scenario (best-case for Yankee haters) is someone like Peter Angelos buying the team and completely f-ing it up. He's actually worse than Steinbrenner was in the late-80's, which I always thought was impossible.

well obviously this is all based on the assumption that george and his personality is what drives him to spend the way he does and that whoever takes over the team may not be as crazy in terms of signing guys and having the highest payroll in baseball every year

One of the things I love about this team is the bullpen is deeper with more quality than it has been in years. I'm not convinced the Lefties are as good, but most of the righties get lefties out, so it shouldn't be a big factor.
I would, however like to see more different "looks" in the bullpen. Most are power arms, with the main exception being lefty specialist Myers. But thats a minor quibble, and maybe one of the rookies on the farm or Karstens can help fill in there.

Ugh. That's just awful. One of the best things about XM is that I can listen to Yankee away games with the home team's radio guys. I cannot listen to Sterling or Waldmyn.

I remember trashing A-Rod year a few years ago and having pretty much everyone against me. I got a whole bunch of stats about how his numbers were big in late innings or something. I was bitching to co-workers in 04 about how dissapointing he was and he had good numbers at the time. Theyre the most empty numbers ever, kinda like McNabbs 300+ yards in that Super Bowl. He Sucked! Anyway..

Some of you know me from awhile ago and know I'm a big fan and it sucks being away from the states not only because of missing family and other things, but missing all these sporting events really sucks ass. This game coming up in an hour is going to be on live here at 9pm and i'll gt to see the first few innings but I just cant stay up that late.
Theres a ton of things I didnt know about the Yanks, like Sheff was gone, Pavano did'nt play at all last year and random other shit. Itll be great to see some of this game tonight. Go yanks!

exactly. Yankee fans make me sick. They booed him today for making an error then give him a curtain call for hitting a home run. If was him I would play out the season, show no respect to all these so called fans, dont embrass anyone. Get your stats and go to a team that the fans will actually want you.

Bats looked great, bullpen was great. Some things to watch, like Phelps defense at 1st. But overall a lovely opening day.

But don't anyone tell me Pavano had a good outing. I cant listen to it. This is the AAA Devil Rays, and he let up 5 runs (4 earned) in 4 1/3 innings. He threw 73 pitches and he ran out of gas? He's got a long way to go before I have any confidence in him.

The Devil Rays have a really good lineup. There is loads of raw potential up and down that lineup. They are the AAA Devil Rays because their pitching staff is Scott Kazmir and 11 other AA guys.

Not that Pavano had a "good" outing, but without the errors he probably puts together 5 strong innings before falling apart. The guy hasn't pitched in almost two years so the tiredness is expected. It's something to build on, plain and simple. He showed flashes, at least. He builds up some arm strength and he could be a solid 3-4.

The nine teams ahead of them are all National league teams. So even with a DH they couldn't outscore 1 NL team. I don't want to hear about how decent their offense is. They have some very good young players but they never score and that is the biggest part of having a good offense.

Yep. Boonie, this is just another example of the excuse making that has become part and parcel of the Torre regime. He's made excuses for years for Pavano, Big Unit and Kevin Brown, and others. He told us the Yanks had "A good approach" in games 4-7 of the 2004 Red Sox Series, when anyone with eyes could see the whole team was pressing. He told us after losing to the Tigers (who limped into the playoffs) that "No one can tell me we didn't have a good season". This is Joe Torre, and this is why I wanted him fired. No accountability.

There's a way of doing this without knocking a player, which of course he cant do. But he could have some standards and consequences around there. But thats not Torre's way, he's above that.

SPY Report

New York Yankees center fielder Johnny Damon has a sore right calf and wasn't in the posted lineup for Wednesday's game against the Devil Rays, which was postponed because of rain.

Damon

"I could barely walk," Damon said. "It felt like cramps the other day, but it's definitely much worse than that."

Damon left Monday's opening victory over Tampa Bay with cramps in both calves, but said Wednesday only the right one was still bothering him. In the clubhouse, he had his right calf wrapped.

"We're probably dealing with a strain, but to what degree we don't know yet," general manager Brian Cashman said. "No bruising. It's not swollen. But it's sore."

Melky Cabrera was slated to start in center field Wednesday, and second baseman Robinson Cano was in the leadoff spot.

Cabrera will fill in for Damon until he returns. If Damon has to go on the disabled list, the Yankees would probably call up an outfielder from the minors. But after talking with team physician Dr. Stuart Hershon, Cashman said a stint on the DL was "not something that's being recommended right now."

No tests on Damon were planned yet. First, Hershon wants to see how Damon feels Thursday, Cashman said.

The GM was asked if an injury to Damon might open up a spot for former outfielder Bernie Williams on the major league roster. Cashman had a one-word answer: "No."

Williams, a longtime stalwart and fan favorite, declined New York's offer of a minor league contract in the offseason and never came to spring training.

Yankees manager Joe Torre said he's comfortable with Cabrera, who got plenty of playing time as a rookie last season because of injuries to fellow outfielders Hideki Matsui and Gary Sheffield. Cabrera batted .280 with seven homers, 50 RBIs and 26 doubles in 460 at-bats. He also scored 75 runs and stole 12 bases while playing excellent defense, especially in left field.

"Obviously, if it doesn't start to get better, we'll become more concerned," Torre said, referring to Damon. "We're certainly confident in Melky's ability. The fact that he played as a regular player for us last year, I feel pretty good about that."

I know how you feel. I shudder when I see Jose Vizcaino toeing the rubber. AP's performance looks pretty much like you'd expect from a 35yr old coming back from mediocre season in the NL.

What do Andy Pettite and Luis Vizcaino have in common? An ERA less than half of Curt Schilling.

I was going to say it takes some balls to criticize the Yanks for spending after jacking off to the 100 Million Dollar Man today, not to mention breaking the bank for the immortals JD Drew and Julio Lugo.

But I can let bygones be bygones.

Well, let's be honest, if Dice-K continues what he did today, then he's worth it. But yeah, accusing the Yankees of ridiculous spending when their farm clubs are re-loaded is stupid.

BTW, did anyone read that the guy who was the Yankees mascot for the AAA team was picked up in a Dateline-style kiddie sting?

This is not a Yankee problem; he was hired when the team was run by the phillies and the mascot itself is a Phanatic take-off.

I am not worried about Andy. It was cold, and he had not pitched in 2 weeks... The inf D i am not worried either.. Its hard to grip the ball right now... And its early... But i am worried about Posada's D.. Anything remotely poorly thrown, is by him... And BTW listening to YES... When the fuck did Robbie Cano, become a gold glove type 2b?? I have always found his D to b mediocre at best, sometimes not good.

Cano by far has the best range in infield. A-Rod is average and Jeter can't field anything hit to the left of him.

Honestly, if I'm in Hawaii, I'm not going to waste time watching May baseball.

The last time we were on vacation, it was different, because it was the playoffs, and the time difference made it the late afternoon. (Game would start at five, so we'd watch in a sports bar and have drinks, over by 8:30, and we'd go out and watch a movie or something)

This just in from Liz: "No, you are most certainly not."

You rooned our AZ vacation with your pouting about the Yankees losing to whichever stupid CA team it was that they were playing and freaked out about having a place to watch it back in '05. (OK, maybe it wasn't ruined entirely, but it was pretty annoying how pissed off you got over the game. They all played like ass and there were a couple of bad calls by the umpires, but I didn't see the sense of getting so pissed off!)

Just don't forget that I'll go to a sports bar at 8am with you to watch the Jets play (or pretend to play, as the case may be made for either) [because there's usually food and many "lovely beverages" involved (mmmm. . .Bloody Marys and chorizo omelettes. . .)] but at least doing that doesn't kill the rest of the day for activities.

Watching baseball on your laptop in HI when we could be doing any number of other things, however . . . :annoyed:

I told you, I'm not going to do it. And you know there's a difference between an NFL game (only 16 a year, and I made sure we had a lot of fun that Sunday, I seem to remember taking a long walk and art museums) and a playoff game and a May baseball game.

Besides, with what I'm spending for the honeymoon, I give you full authorization to call me out if I'm watching too much sports while we're on vacay.
