Also an amazing year in videogames. I'm too lazy to prove why, but I'm pretty sure it was.

seven and the usual suspects are incredible movies, but i'd have to go with the year that contains american beauty, sixth sense, fight club and the matrix. i was all about to give it to '95, but now it's not even close, in my opinion.

I took a stab at 1975 because I knew about Jaws and Cuckoo's Nest. Pretty fucking good year. At any rate, the 70's were the best decade for American film.

The Holy Grail
Jaws
One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest
Dog Day Afternoon
Three Days of the Condor
Rocky Horror Picture Show
The Eiger Sanction
Rollerball
Death Race 2000
Shampoo
Tommy
Barry Lyndon
The Shootist
French Connection II
The Stepford Wives
Return of the Pink Panther

I think I've beaten your 1995.

OK, here is, in my opinion, a much better list of the quality films that came out in 1999. I agree that other eras, namely the late 60's to the late 80's, can't be topped for some of the great produced, but I can see the argument that 1999 might be the single best year in terms of excellent or at least chance-taking films. Check it out:

American Beauty

American Psycho

Being John Malkovich

Boys Don't Cry

Dogma

Election

Fight Club

Go

The Insider

The Limey

Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels

Magnolia

The Matrix

Mr. Death: The Rise and Fall of Fred A. Leuchter, Jr

Office Space

Princess Mononoke

Run Lola Run

SLC Punk

South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut

The Straight Story

The Talented Mr. Ripley

Three Kings

Topsy-Turvy

I know I'm biased because I lwas actually alive for that year as opposed to some of the other great years for movies that were before my time, but I remember actually noticing just how many good to great movies I was able to see in '99 and just how far the quality slid each year after that.

I lean towards 1999 because of Fight Club, American Beauty and Dogma.

It'd be interesting to check what is the greatest disparity between two years. In other words which really great year was followed by the most awful year for movies.
