Today I went to court for an alcohol citation I got at a party back in September. I wore a nice suit, and brought a copy of my grades from last semester and my letter saying I was in the Dean's list. Didn't fuckin matter!! There was probably 70 people there from that party and from what I saw, everyone got the same sentence if it was their first offense. 10 hours of community service and a $100 fine and court fees suspended. There was a guy that went right before me who came late and wore jeans and a t-shirt who got the same deal. I don't fuckin get it. I learned a lesson today, theres no point to having your shit together, it's a waste of time and energy.

No, if that's what you took away from it then you're missing out on a real lesson.

How many people do you think that judge, any judge sees on a daily basis who are scummy as hell? How many of those do you think get all dressed to impress (or decieve)? I'm not at all saying you are one of those.

The fact that you dressed up, had a letter from the Dean and it was only your first offense means nothing. The reason he gave you the same as he gave everyone else is because you were all there together.

So if you take away from this that you shouldn't try, shouldn't look respectable and shouldn't stay out of trouble then you're wrong.

What you should take out of this is if you don't want to get in shit, don't want to be lumped in with undesireable people and don't want to face the same repercussions as everyone else you should keep yourself out of those situations.

On second thought, did you get a haircut too? That could have been the difference maker.

Logistics man. how long do you think it would have taken them to decide on a case by case basis (even if that is what they are supposed to do)?

For something like underage drinking it doesn't matter - nobody's going to jail or anything like that and they most likely have someone who could testify they saw you have alcohol. I've been to district court plenty of times in the exact same situation. EVERYONE gets community service. Nothing you can possibly do.

If you had robbed or mugged someone, then the dean's list might have mattered. But for someone facing such a light charge, mitigating evidence doesn't matter.

From the title of this thread, I was hoping it was someone that had the shits during court... Just think of how bad you would have felt if you wore your good suit and had that running down your leg in front of the judge. Now don't you feel better in retrospect?

Court is good... good for me to poop on.

I keed, I keed !

you should have postponed or plead not guilty so you could retun

another day. all the other defendants would have been done with their cases

and you would be able to talk to the prosecutor and possibly lower the fine and or time.

think next time son.

it's your right to have a jury trial for any offense your charged with in municipal

court, but that wasn't my point.by asking for a continuance or pleading not guilty

you would not be with the 70 or so ham and eggers with the same charges on the same day.

its to your advantage to seperate yourself from the others in that situation in my opinion

...with all due respect, that's just not the way it works in Maryland, which is where he is.

1. For this charge, you CAN'T have a jury trial - there's not enough of a punishment at stake.

2. For this charge, there IS a prosecutor present and you're not just dealing with a judge. The prosecutor's not going to want to waste his time with anything but a nominal fine and community service unless they're a total dick, but that's beside the point. I ran a red light this past summer and there was no prosecutor for that.

3. There would be absolutely no advantage to asking for a continuance because the penalty is so light. All asking for a continuance is likely to do is to piss off the judge. Really, though, continuances are discretionary anyway and for matters such as this there's no reason why they shouldn't be wrapped up tout de suite.

I will have to defer to his honor jughead though for exactly what a judge would think, but that's the way it pretty much works here. From someone who spent 8 months with the State's Attorney's Office.

From the way johnniewalker describes his citation, it almost sounds like it's a civil citation, which is what I had to do for running the red light. In fact it was under almost the exact same circumstances at court. It was under the traffic code. This offense is under the criminal code.

My MIP in CA didn't go to court. All I had to do was go to some group counselling sessions with some ex-druggy counselor in a tweed coat and long hair. Before each session, my friends and I would do drug "research" in the parking lot.
