Id say it jumped the shark at Survivor Series 1997. The Montreal Screwjob (i.e. the biggest work in the history of the business) changed everything. Or if it jumped before then, i'd have to say it was when Vince admitted that wrestling wasnt real to avoid having to pay out extra money

No, the mcmahon/austin era didnt begin until after montreal. Once McMahon did that "Bret screwed Bret" interview he became a character.. Sorry to say i was never a big fan of the "Attitude Era", as I saw it as a blatant ripoff of what ECW was doing at the time..

I think we tend to give more credit to that match than its due, just because of the all the outside factors around it. And I would say that it was a JTS moment because the whole "fourth wall" thing was broken. We as fans were "allowed" to see inside the business and hereby ruined the mystique around it. WCW killed that for me when they brought Hogan in and WWE did it in 1997 and again on July 9, 2001 when they added ECW to the InVasion angle. I stopped being a fan on that day..

There's no way wrestling jumped the shark in '94... The nWo was INCREDIBLE, and that wasn't until '97, and ran well into '98 before the bit went bad. A few points that one could argue are when wrestling jumped the shark:

* nWo Wolf Pack (this is when the nWo bit really started to go sour. They broke it up into factions, Sting joined, red & black, black & white, nWo Hollywood... oof. One of the greatest angles ever was transformed into one of the biggest clusterfucks ever.)
* Giving the WCW belt to David Arquette. This illegitimized whatever small amount of dignity WCW had left, and ultimately led my next point...
* Vince buying out WCW and ECW. No competition = No product. This is when wrestling ended as far as I'm concerned.

For me, the exact pinpoint moment it jumped, is when Vince McMahon emerged from the lockerroom during the main event of Wrestlemania X-7. Rock Austin, soldout astrodome, hot crowd, hometown boy about to complete the comeback, all the had to do was put Austin over. Instead, we have Austin do a pisspoor heel turn that the fans in attendance didn't even acknowledge, side with HHHIV who had tried to kill him, totally killing Austin's bad ass character and then he stood 2nd fiddle during their tag team interviews.

Austin turning heel COULD have been great, but he wasn't committed. You needed Austin in a business suit, going full on corporate, maybe even growing the hair in, you would have had heat that would have gone for years! But that half ass turn, teaming with HHHIV, it really set forth a long time of WWF decline.

There have been occasional spikes through the years, Flair's first return, the intial moments of the invasion, Hogan-Rock at the next Wrestlemania, but those were one hit wonders that built no momentum.

The Fed was in decline prior to X-7, but the booking of that main event killed the Fed in so many ways. Overpushing HHHIV, cannibalizing the credibility of Rock and Austin, and the first sense of too much McMahon and things only went down from there.

You guys are screwing things up... Vince didn't "buy" ECW like he did WCW. ECW closed shop for a while and Vince bought the assets from Acclaim. Vince brought it back. WCW was still tangible as an entity before Vince screwed it up.
