I remember hearing once that if as soon as you wake up, you do 10 push up's, that in a month you would be quite a bit stronger.
I tried it. At first I could only manage 5 or 6 before my arms gave out. Within a few days of doing it though, I began to feel my stomach tightining up and getting stronger. Then before I knew it I was doing 10. I did 10 every morning for 3 weeks, and then decided to add a few. I got up to 15, and then 18. Now I am doing 20 no problem.

How many can you do?

this actually came up in conversation with a few family members about 2 weeks ago. i'm not in great shape and don't work out, but i was always able to do pushups and situps real easy. but the last time i probably did a pushup was 3-5 years ago and i've added 15Lbs. i said i could do 40, but was only able to get to about 26 or 27...which was about 25 more then the others in the room who actually tried could do. i was actually able to do 5 one handed pushups...but it made me sore for about 3 days. so i won't try them again soon.

I was doing sets of 35 to 25 about every other day then I got the idea to put jugs of water in my backpack to increase the weight - doing less reps. Odd thing was, after a couple months of doing it with the weights, and getting up to 35 to 25 with about 30 pounds on my back, I stopped for a couple months while I was on the road. When I started doing them again (without weights) I could still only do 35 to 25 reps. I was really surprised how much strength and/or endurance I lost in such a short period of time. My shoulder's been hurting me the last couple months so the only workout I've gotten in that time was an hour or two swim every day for a couple weeks in southern Thailand, but once I start back up again guess how many reps I'm going to be able to do? I'm beginning to hate those two numbers.

I think I'm doing it wrong.

push ups are great for firming up the upper body. in the summer i'll do sets of 12, usually 60 or 72 total by the pool and then swim 14 to 20 laps right afterwards. but i've been a real lazy fuck in the winter

my brother bill would do a thousand a day for a while after he came out of the marines. and my brother gorgeous george would do a whole deck of cards. flip a card, do the amount on the card, flip the next card, and so on. he picked that up in the navy

my first set i could probably rip off 20 or so. then it will just decrease after that so I just stick with sets of 12. alternating one set with hands closer together, next set with hands further apart

I was recommended do 3 reps of 30 pushups twice a day, and it was really working for me last summer. Then I just got a tad lazy/busy over the holidays, started doing it again and hurt my shoulder 2 weeks ago. I can't quite do as many as I was, and I stop if it starts hurting too much, but I'm doing about 30 a day once or twice a day right now.

The best way to do it is to do the "10-down" method. you start doing 10, or however many is your max, 30 second break, then 9, break, 8, break, 7, break, 6, and so on until you get to 1. Do that every day and you'll be up to 30 or 40 down in no time. Once you can do that, you break out the deck of cards and do 'em like that. Flip over an 8, do 8. Flip over a King, do 13, and so on until you finish the deck. This method was taught to me by a former Recon Marine and convict. I guess he had lots of time in the joint to do the deck of cards. The highest I've ever gotten to is 15 down, which, while it doesn't sound like a lot, actually works out to 120 pushups in a relatively short period of time.

I need to start doing them again. I did push ups, out of boredom, during a 15 day jail stay (no... not THOSE kind of push ups). On my first try I could only do about 3. After a couple of days I was up to doing several reps a day of 20 or 25 (for a total of up to 200 in a day). It's really easy, if you do it several times a day.
